- International Gold Futures Up 1.4%... Bargain Buying Inflow
- Today's Gold Prices (Korea Gold Exchange 0.23%¡è, Korea Exchange 0.82%¡è)
International gold prices rebounded after just one day. Prices rose as bargain buying flowed in after prices fell to their lowest levels in the past week, coupled with investors closely watching the situation in the Middle East and the direction of the U.S. Federal Reserve's monetary policy.
On the 9th (U.S. local time), August delivery gold futures traded on the New York Commodity Exchange (COMEX) closed at $4,140.80 per ounce, up 1.4% from the previous trading day.
Spot gold prices also successfully rebounded after falling to their lowest level since July 1st during the session. As of 2:05 PM Eastern Time, the price stood at $4,130.58 per ounce, up 1.3% from the previous trading day.
Market analysts suggest that the influx of bargain-hunting following the previous day's sharp decline had a significant impact. Investors are closely watching both the U.S. Federal Reserve's future interest rate policy and geopolitical risks in the Middle East.
Although the Fed kept the benchmark interest rate unchanged at the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting last June, the minutes indicated that some members mentioned the possibility of further rate hikes. However, the market expects the Fed to maintain a cautious stance, monitoring upcoming economic indicators rather than raising rates immediately.
According to CME FedWatch, the market is currently pricing in a probability of a benchmark rate hike in September at approximately 62%.
The situation in the Middle East is also a variable influencing gold prices. Tensions have risen again following the ceasefire as Iranian forces attacked U.S. military facilities in the Gulf region in retaliation for U.S. airstrikes. While geopolitical instability stimulates a preference for safe-haven assets, it also acts as a burden on gold prices by potentially amplifying inflation concerns through rising international oil prices and increasing the likelihood of interest rate hikes. Investors' attention is turning toward the U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Producer Price Index (PPI) to be released next week, as well as Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh's congressional testimony. The market is expected to gauge the Fed's future monetary policy direction through these releases.
Market outlooks were somewhat mixed. In a recent report, HSBC lowered its forecast for the average gold price in 2026 from the previous $4,864 per ounce to $4,560, and its forecast for 2027 from $5,000 to $4,925. However, considering the central bank's steady gold purchases and geopolitical uncertainties, the firm predicted that the long-term bullish trend in gold prices would continue.
Other precious metals also rose across the board. Spot silver prices rose 3.4% to $60.25 per ounce, while platinum recorded a 2.3% increase to $1,615.25. Palladium also closed at $1,253.25, up 3.3%.
Domestic gold prices also rebounded slightly.
As of 10:30 AM on the 10th, the purchase price of one don (24K, 3.75g) of pure gold at the Korea Gold Exchange was 877,000 won, up 2,000 won (0.23%) from the previous trading day.
The selling price of one don of pure gold rose by 1,000 won (0.14%) to 735,000 won. The selling price of 18K rose by 800 won (0.15%) to 540,300 won, and the selling price of 14K rose by 600 won (0.14%) to 419,000 won. The product market price applies when buying 18K and 14K.
Silver prices also showed strength. The buying price for one don of silver rose by 80 won (0.66%) to 12,050 won, while the selling price increased by 120 won (1.18%) to 10,180 won.
On the other hand, platinum fell slightly. The buying price for one don of platinum dropped by 1,000 won (0.29%) from the previous trading day to 341,000 won, while the selling price remained unchanged at 277,000 won.
In the Korea Exchange (KRX) gold market, the spot price of gold is trading at 199,440 won per gram as of 10:30 AM, up 0.82% from the previous day.
In the Seoul foreign exchange market, the won-dollar exchange rate continued to fluctuate around 1,520 won during the morning session.
Real-time gold market rates and international gold prices can be checked on the websites of the Korea Gold Exchange and the KRX Gold Market.
Meanwhile, market analysts suggest that while gold remains a representative safe-haven asset, attention should also be paid to industrial metals in the long term.
In a recent report, FTSE Russell, a global index provider, projected that gold will continue to serve as a core asset in portfolios, benefiting from sustained purchases by central banks, geopolitical uncertainty, and the global trend of de-dollarization.
However, the report cited the U.S. Federal Reserve's tightening stance and high real interest rates as factors limiting the pace of gold price increases. The explanation is that while the preference for safe-haven assets supports gold prices, high interest rates raise the opportunity cost of holding gold, suggesting that a phase in which the two factors remain in balance may continue for the time being.
At the same time, FTSE Russell analyzed that investors need to broaden their focus to industrial raw materials. The spread of artificial intelligence (AI) and the global energy transition are driving long-term demand for raw materials, and consequently, industrial metals are emerging as a new investment theme.
In particular, the report assessed that recent tensions in the Middle East have served as an opportunity to re-emphasize the importance of energy security. Analysis suggests that while countries are currently focusing on securing oil and natural gas in the short term, they are highly likely to further expand investments in energy transition—including solar power, batteries, power grids, and electric vehicles—in the long term.
FTSE Russell explained that, in fact, the scale of global investment in clean energy already significantly exceeds that of fossil fuels, and the economic viability of electrification is increasing due to falling prices for solar panels and batteries. The expansion of investment in AI data centers and semiconductors was also cited as a factor driving steady growth in demand for power infrastructure and industrial raw materials.
These changes are also expected to have a positive impact on the industrial metals market. FTSE Russell analyzed that as AI infrastructure development and energy transition proceed simultaneously, the demand for industrial metals needed for power grids and data center construction is highly likely to increase over the long term.
However, the assessment is that the role of gold is not weakening. FTSE Russell predicted that gold will continue to maintain its status as a core safe-haven asset in long-term investment portfolios, given the ongoing geopolitical uncertainty, central bank gold purchases, and the trend of diversifying foreign exchange reserves.
