-20th international gold price 0.2%¡è
-Today's domestic gold price (Korea Gold Exchange 0%-)

International gold prices rose slightly on Friday (local time in the US). This is because expectations for the Fed's speed control are further amplified ahead of the weekend.

At the New York Mercantile Exchange on the 20th (local time), the gold price for February delivery closed at $1,928.20, up $4.30 (0.2%) from the previous trading day. This is the highest in nine months since the end of April last year.

On this day, gold prices focused on adjusting the pace of the Fed's rate hike. Ahead of the blackout period, when Fed officials refrain from talking about monetary policy, senior Fed officials have expressed their preference for a 25 basis point rate hike, one after another, a baby step. Low interest rates tend to favor gold prices because they reduce the opportunity cost of holding interest-free assets.

Market participants expect the Jan. 31-February 1 Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) to return to a 25 basis point hike. The Fed funds rate futures market reflects the possibility of a 25bp hike in the FOMC as 99.2%.

In fact, it is 25bp for sure. The possibility of a 50bp hike was only 0.8%.

On this day, Christopher Waller, the director of the Fed, said at the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting scheduled for January 31-February 1 that he favors a rate hike of 25 basis points. The market reacted immediately in that Waller had been representing the Fed's executive branch. The dollar index at one point recorded 101.914, and abruptly turned downward, putting upward pressure on gold prices.

"After significant economy-wide rate hikes with monetary policy, the time is right to slow the pace of growth, but not the time to stop," he said. "I prefer a 25 basis point hike at the next FOMC meeting later this month."

Patrick Harker, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia (Yeoneun), also repeatedly emphasized the need for baby step conversion. "I think a 25 basis point hike would be appropriate going forward," he said. "We'll raise rates a few times this year, but I think the era of 75 basis points at a time is definitely over."

Concerns emerged the day before that the US Fed's hawkish stance would continue, but within a day, the theory of a slowdown in the Fed rate hike raised its head again, stimulating gold buying sentiment.

Gold prices have risen by 5.6% this year. It rose 0.3% this week.

Gold prices rose for a fifth straight week, the longest run since August 2020. Treasury yields and the dollar retreated from peaks late last year as investors monitored a slowdown in US inflation.

This week, the 10-year yield and the dollar showed a weekly decline, leading the gold price to rise. The Dollar Index fell 0.17% on a weekly basis.

Falling dollar and Treasury yields are favorable factors for gold prices. This is because the perceived price of gold, which is usually traded in dollars, and the opportunity cost of holding gold are lower.

Recently, gold prices have rallied sharply above $1,900 per ounce. However, experts were wary of continued gold price hikes ahead of the Fed's rate hike.

¡°Concerns remain that gold prices have already risen too much before the Fed and other central banks actually stop raising rates,¡± said Rupert Rowling, market analyst at Kinesis Money. ¡°It can be very vulnerable to a downturn,¡± he explained.

Daniel Galli, a commodity strategist at TD Securities, also predicted that the US dollar is stabilizing in some form and that gold prices could decline by next week.

The domestic gold price, which closed the rise in 5 trading days the previous day, showed a steady trend on the morning of the 21st.

According to the Korea Gold Exchange on this day, when a consumer buys 1 don (24k, 3.75g) of pure gold, the price is 329,000 won (including VAT), the same as the closing price of the battlefield (as of 9:40 am).

When a consumer sold 1 don of pure gold, the price was 295,000 won, the same as the battlefield. When selling 18k and 14k, the prices are 213,900 won and 165,200 won, respectively, maintaining the closing price of the previous trading day (when buying 18k and 14k, product market prices are applied).

In addition, the market price of silver increased by 0.24% and 0.63%, respectively, to 4,170 won when buying and 3,190 won when selling.

On another exchange, the Korea Standard Gold Exchange, when buying 1 don of pure gold, the price is 328,000 won (including vat), up 1,000 won from the previous day, and when selling, it shows 296,000 won, the same as the previous day's closing price.

The previous day, the gold price of the Korea Exchange (KRX) finished trading at 76,530 won per gram, up 0.9% from the previous day's closing price, and the total trading value was 4.473 billion won.

At this time, the international gold price (as of 9:40 am, London LBMA GOLD Price) is moving around the $1,926 level.

In the Seoul foreign exchange market, the won/dollar exchange rate closed at 1235.5 won, up 3.4 won from the previous trading day's closing price.

Detailed daily gold price inquiries can be found on the websites of the Korea Gold Exchange and the Korea Exchange (KRX).
