-16th international gold price up 1%

The international gold price surpassed the $2,400 level for the first time in history. Geopolitical risks have put upward pressure on gold prices.

On Tuesday (16th local time) at the New York Mercantile Exchange, the gold price for June futures this year closed at $2,407.80 per ounce, up $24.8 (1%) from the previous day. The price of gold closed at the $2,400 level for the first time in history, hitting an all-time high as a closing price. The intraday gold price moved around $2,379.0 to $2,414.0, rising for four consecutive trading days until today.

As tensions in the Middle East continue, safe haven gold buying has driven up gold prices. On this day, Chairman Powell made a hawkish statement that set back expectations for an interest rate cut, but this was offset by the demand for gold as a safe asset due to Middle East risks.

Iran and Israel, who exchanged their first direct airstrikes, are raising the level of threats to each other, saying they will "inflict pain."

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi warned Israel, which had announced a counterattack on the 15th (local time), that "any small act against Iran's interests will result in a severe, extensive and painful response to the perpetrator."

According to Iran's state-run IRNA news agency, President Raisi made this statement in a phone call with Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani that night.

Earlier in the day, Israel's Channel 12 broadcast reported that the Israeli cabinet convened due to Iran's retaliatory airstrikes was discussing a number of counterattack methods, and that all of these methods would be 'painful methods' for Iran without causing an all-out war.

Amid concerns about heightened tensions in the Middle East, the price of gold soared to $2,414.80 per ounce on this day.

Jerome Powell, Chairman of the Federal Reserve System (Fed), the US central bank, took a hawkish stance on this day, greatly dampening expectations of an interest rate cut.

Powell said it would likely take longer than previously expected to reach greater confidence that inflation would fall to 2%.

At the Washington Forum on the Canadian economy held in Washington, D.C. on this day, Chairman Powell said, "Recent economic indicators clearly do not provide greater confidence," and added, "Rather, it seems that it will take longer than expected to reach such confidence." .

As the U.S. economy continues to grow robustly and even price indicators have significantly exceeded expectations for the past three months, Chairman Powell is interpreted to have changed his existing policy stance to become more hawkish (preferring monetary tightening).

With Chairman Powell's remarks, uncertainty about when and whether an interest rate cut this year will occur has deepened, and the possibility of an interest rate cut in June is about to be discarded.

According to the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) fed watch tool, the probability of an interest rate freeze in June jumped to 83.1% in the federal funds rate futures market on this day. The possibility of a 25bp cut was pushed down to 16.4%. The central bank's prolonged high interest rates are a negative factor for gold, which reduces the attractiveness of gold as an asset that does not bear interest.

In response to Chairman Powell's hawkish remarks, the dollar and government bond yields strengthened, limiting the upper limit of the gold price.

The dollar index recorded 106.324, up 0.128% from the previous day. The dollar index, which had been on the rise since the morning session in New York, rose to 106.514 immediately after Chairman Powell's remarks, breaking the highest since early November of last year.

Experts explained that the price of gold could soon fall if it moves in line with the Federal Reserve's monetary policy.

¡°The market is in pause mode, waiting for another opportunity to emerge from the confrontation between Israel and Iran,¡± said Jim Wyckoff, senior analyst at Kitco Metals. ¡°If the situation in the Middle East escalates, I could see another rally in gold.¡± ¡°We will see,¡± he said.

He added, "If the Middle East conflict eases, the market's focus will shift to the Federal Reserve. It has become clear that the Federal Reserve will not be able to cut interest rates anytime soon, which is a bearish factor for the gold and silver markets."

On the other hand, there are predictions that the price of gold will rise to $3,000 by the end of the year, thanks to continued physical demand and its appeal as a geopolitical hedge.

Citigroup, a large investment bank on Wall Street, explained, ¡°We expect the price of gold to be $3,000 per ounce over the next 6 to 18 months,¡± adding, ¡°The lower limit of the gold price has also increased from about $1,000 to $2,000 per ounce.¡±

Last week, Goldman Sachs also referred to the gold market as an "unwavering bull market" and raised its gold price target from $2,300 to $2,700 per ounce by the end of the year.

Meanwhile, on this day, the silver price closed at $28.376, down 1.18%, and copper fell 1.72% to $4.3035. Platinum fell 1.2% to $958.03, and palladium fell 2.3% to $1,012.0.

At this time, the international gold price (as of 8 a.m., London LBMA gold price) is moving around the $2,385 level.

Detailed domestic gold price inquiries can be found on the Korea Gold Exchange and Korea Exchange (KRX) websites.
