Domestic gold prices have risen. The price of pure gold at the Korea Gold Exchange surpassed 880,000 won per don, and the Korea Exchange (KRX) gold price also rose by over 1%, recovering the 200,000 won mark per gram. It is interpreted that upward pressure continued in the domestic gold market as international gold prices rose to the $4,400 range per ounce and expectations for further U.S. interest rate hikes receded.

As of 10:10 a.m. on the 18th, the purchase price of pure gold (24K, 3.75g) at the Korea Gold Exchange was 881,000 won, up 5,000 won (0.57%) from the previous trading day.

The selling price rose by 5,000 won (0.68%) to 738,000 won.

The selling price of 18K gold products rose by 3,700 won (0.68%) to 542,500 won, while 14K gold rose by 2,800 won (0.67%) to 420,700 won.

Platinum and silver prices also increased.

The purchase price of one don (unit of weight) of platinum rose by 3,000 won (0.85%) from the previous trading day to 351,000 won. The selling price also rose by 3,000 won (1.05%) to 285,000 won.

For silver, the buying price was 12,450 won per don, up 150 won (1.20%) from the previous trading day. The selling price was 10,510 won, an increase of 120 won (1.14%).

The KRX Gold Market also showed strength.

At the same time, the price of gold per gram in the KRX Gold Market was trading at 201,600 won, up 3,250 won (1.64%) from the previous trading day.

It started the day at 201,900 won and rose to 202,000 won during the session. The low was 201,400 won.

The KRX Gold Market was closed yesterday due to the substitute holiday for Liberation Day. On the previous trading day, the 14th, it closed at 198,350 won per gram.

At the time, the price fell below the 200,000 won mark, dropping 2,220 won (1.11%) from the previous trading day, but it surpassed the 200,000 won mark again as trading resumed today.

Pure gold prices at the Korea Gold Exchange are also continuing their upward trend. While the price to buy one don (unit of weight) was 876,000 won yesterday, it rose to 881,000 won this morning.

It appears that the strength of international gold prices influenced the rise in both domestic markets.

On the 17th (US local time), spot gold prices rose 0.9% to $4,417.24 per ounce. US December delivery gold futures also closed at $4,473.70 per ounce, up 0.8%.

International gold prices rose to around $4,450 during trading last week before being pushed down by profit-taking, but have since recovered the $4,400 level.

One of the major factors driving up gold prices is the weakness of the US dollar.

The U.S. dollar has fallen to its lowest level in over two months. A decline in the dollar's value can lower the burden of purchasing dollar-denominated gold for investors using other currencies.

The retreat of market expectations regarding further interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve (Fed) also contributed to the rise in gold prices.

Recently, employment and consumption in the U.S. have shown sluggishness, and inflation has slowed. Consequently, the market views the likelihood of the Fed raising interest rates in September as lower.

According to CME FedWatch, the market's perceived probability of a September rate hike stands at around 33%, a significant drop from 51.2% a month ago.

In a survey of economic experts conducted by Reuters from the 12th to the 17th, the majority also predicted that the Fed would maintain the benchmark interest rate at the current 3.50–3.75% until the end of the year.

Unlike bonds or deposits, gold does not pay interest. If the outlook for rising interest rates weakens, the relative opportunity cost of holding gold may decrease. However, there are still variables that make it difficult to predict a unilateral rise in gold prices.

This is because international oil prices are rising again.

Amidst continuing tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, the prospects for negotiations between the U.S. and Iran remain uncertain. Iran has also issued a strong message that if diplomatic efforts with the U.S. fail, tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and surrounding regions could escalate further.

Tensions in the Middle East could stimulate demand for gold, a representative safe-haven asset. Conversely, a significant rise in oil prices could increase inflationary pressure in the U.S. again.

If prices rise again, the possibility of a Federal Reserve interest rate hike could resurface, leading to a rise in U.S. Treasury yields. While this is positive for demand for safe-haven assets, it creates a structure that could put pressure on gold prices from a monetary policy perspective.

In fact, U.S. long-term Treasury yields remain at high levels. On the 17th, compounded by concerns over fiscal burdens, the yield on U.S. 30-year Treasuries rose to its highest level since 2007. International gold prices have shown a strong rebound since the beginning of August.

Gold prices have risen by approximately 9% this month, climbing to the $4,400 per ounce range. Gold prices, which had soared to $5,595 per ounce last January, briefly fell below $4,000 following the war between the U.S., Israel, and Iran, but have recently shown signs of recovery.

The possibility of a recovery in demand from institutional investors is also drawing attention.

Buying interest in large gold bars is reappearing in major Asian gold markets. Some market experts suggest that demand from institutions, central banks, and sovereign wealth funds may have influenced the recent price rebound. However, as specific buyers have not been identified, this remains in the realm of speculation.

Investment-oriented demand for gold is also expanding again in China.

According to the World Gold Council (WGC), Chinese gold ETFs turned to net inflows in July following capital outflows in May and June. The People's Bank of China is also continuing its central bank purchasing stance, including increasing its gold reserves. Such demand from investment and central banks is a factor that can support international gold prices. On the other hand, sluggish demand for jewelry and gold coins due to high gold prices could limit the extent of the rise.

There are also technical concerns.

As international gold prices have risen rapidly recently, analysis suggests they are approaching short-term overbought territory. The area around $4,500 per ounce, where the 200-day moving average is located, is also cited as a major resistance zone.

Silver prices are also showing strength.

On the 17th (US local time), spot silver prices rose 2.1% to $66.01 per ounce. Platinum recorded a 1.3% increase to $1,770.30, and palladium rose 1.1% to $1,326.92.

At the Korea Gold Exchange, the purchase price of silver also rose 1.20% on the same day. This means that both gold and silver showed an upward trend in both the international and domestic markets. Unlike gold, silver is significantly influenced not only by demand for safe-haven assets and investment but also by industrial supply and demand conditions. Recently, as silver production has increased and there are signs of a partial recovery in real investment demand following price adjustments, it is necessary to pay attention to changes in supply and demand.

Market participants' attention is now turning toward the Federal Reserve.

On the 19th (U.S. local time), the minutes of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting held last July will be released. At the time, the Fed kept the benchmark interest rate unchanged, but some policy members argued for a rate hike.

However, employment, inflation, and consumption indicators released after the meeting moved in a direction that weakened prospects for further tightening by the Fed.

Therefore, if the minutes reveal the extent of policy members' caution regarding inflation and how they assessed the future interest rate path, it is possible that this will affect the gold market via the dollar and Treasury yields.

In the domestic gold market, the exchange rate is also a variable.

At this moment, the won-dollar exchange rate is 1,409.40 won. As the value of the won has recently strengthened, it may partially limit the reflection of the rise in international gold prices directly into domestic gold prices. This is because if the won-dollar exchange rate falls, the price of gold converted into won becomes relatively lower, even for the same dollar-denominated price.

Nevertheless, the price of pure gold at the Korea Gold Exchange rose to 881,000 won per don on this day, and the KRX gold price increased by 1.64%, recovering the 200,000 won mark per gram.

For the time being, domestic and international gold markets are expected to be influenced not only by U.S. interest rate outlooks, the dollar, and government bond yields, but also by the geopolitical situation in the Middle East surrounding the Strait of Hormuz and movements in international oil prices. With international gold prices rising back into the $4,400 range, attention is focused on whether they can overcome the resistance around the $4,500 mark.

Real-time gold prices can be checked at the Korea Gold Exchange and the Korea Exchange (KRX) gold market.
