Domestic gold prices rebounded sharply in just one day. The price of pure gold at the Korea Gold Exchange surpassed 880,000 won per don, and the gold price at the Korea Exchange (KRX) also jumped nearly 3%, recovering the 200,000 won mark per gram. It is interpreted that the impact of the U.S. Treasury Department¡¯s unexpected measures to support long-term government bond liquidity—which caused bond yields to plummet and the dollar to fall—leading international gold prices to surge by over 3%, has been reflected in the domestic market.

As of 10:00 AM on the 20th, the purchase price of pure gold (24K, 3.75g) at the Korea Gold Exchange was 882,000 won, up 24,000 won (2.72%) from the previous day's closing price of 858,000 won.

The selling price was 738,000 won, an increase of 16,000 won (2.17%) from the previous day.

The selling price of 18K gold products rose to 542,500 won, an increase of 11,800 won (2.18%) from the previous day, while 14K gold rose to 420,700 won, an increase of 9,100 won (2.16%).

The prices of platinum and silver jumped even more sharply than gold. The purchase price of one don of platinum rose to 353,000 won, an increase of 17,000 won (4.82%) from the previous day. The selling price also increased by 14,000 won (4.90%) to 286,000 won.

For silver, the purchase price jumped 630 won (5.09%) from the previous day to 12,380 won per don. The selling price rose by 530 won (5.07%) to 10,460 won.

The KRX gold market is also showing strength.

At the same time, the price of gold per gram on the KRX gold market is trading at 201,350 won, up 5,770 won (2.95%) from the previous day.

It started the day at 201,420 won and rose to 202,060 won during trading. The low was 200,950 won.

The KRX gold price closed at 195,580 won the previous day. Although it fell 4,370 won (2.19%) from the previous day, dropping into the 190,000 won range, it immediately regained the 200,000 won mark on the same day.

The sharp rebound in domestic gold prices coincided with trends in the international gold market.

On the 19th (U.S. local time), spot gold prices surged 3.6% to $4,487.91 per ounce. During trading, it soared to $4,499.20, marking its highest level since June 4.

U.S. December gold futures also closed at $4,545.30 per ounce, up 2.8%.

This is the exact opposite of the situation the day before.

On the 18th, international gold prices fell by more than 1% due to inflation concerns stemming from a surge in U.S. long-term Treasury yields and rising international oil prices.

In particular, as the yield on 30-year U.S. Treasuries surpassed 5.3% and soared to its highest level since 2007, the investment appeal of non-interest-paying gold relatively diminished.

However, measures taken by the U.S. Treasury Department changed the market sentiment within just one day.

The U.S. Treasury Department announced that it would expand the scale of liquidity support purchases for long-term Treasury bonds with maturities of 10 years or more by at least double.

The targets are long-term nominal Treasury bonds with maturities of 10 to 20 years and 20 to 30 years. The expanded measures are scheduled to be in effect from the 9th of next month until November 4.

The Treasury Department explained that this measure is intended to increase liquidity in the long-term Treasury bond market.

The market reaction was immediate.

The yield on 30-year U.S. Treasuries, which had soared to 5.337% the previous day, plummeted by nearly 10 basis points (1 bp = 0.01 percentage point) at one point. The yield on 10-year Treasuries also fell.

On the afternoon of the 19th (U.S. local time), the yield on 10-year Treasury bonds stood at 4.655%, while the yield on 30-year bonds stood at 5.196%. Conversely, the yield on 2-year bonds, which is relatively sensitive to the Federal Reserve's benchmark interest rate outlook, rose slightly.

This effectively means that long-term Treasury yields, which had weighed down the gold market the previous day, became the driving force behind the rise in gold prices within just one day.

Gold does not pay interest.

When Treasury yields rise, the opportunity cost of holding gold increases compared to interest-bearing bonds. Conversely, when Treasury yields fall, the relative investment attractiveness of gold may increase.

The weakening dollar also supported the rise in gold prices.

Following the U.S. Treasury Department's announcement, the dollar index, which measures the value of the dollar against major currencies, fell by more than 0.8%.

When the dollar's value drops, investors using other currencies can purchase dollar-denominated gold at a relatively lower cost, which can be a positive factor for gold demand.

According to Reuters, gold rose by more than 4% during intraday trading. The dollar index fell 0.84% to 98.80.

Technical trends have also shifted.

Spot gold prices have broken through the 100-day moving average, which was situated at approximately $4,381. As the gold market has recently crossed key technical resistance levels one after another, attention is now focused on whether there will be further gains.

However, it is difficult to conclude that the monetary policy environment surrounding gold prices has become entirely favorable for gold.

The minutes of the U.S. Federal Reserve's July Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting, released on the same day, indicated that vigilance regarding inflation remains strong.

During the meeting held on the 28th and 29th of last month, several Fed officials supported interest rate hikes, and many policy members took the position that additional rate hikes might be necessary if inflation does not fall to the Fed's target of 2%.

Recently released U.S. economic indicators are pointing in a different direction.

As employment, consumption, and price indicators have successively come out weaker than expected, market expectations for further interest rate hikes have retreated significantly compared to before.

** According to CME FedWatch, the market is pricing in a 65% probability that the Federal Reserve will keep the benchmark interest rate unchanged at its meeting on September 15–16.

Ultimately, it appears that the Treasury Department¡¯s expanded liquidity support for long-term government bonds and the resulting decline in market interest rates had a stronger impact on the gold market today than the hawkish signals in the FOMC minutes.

It is also noteworthy that international gold prices have risen to a significant level.

Gold prices have shown a strong rebound this month.

International gold prices, which hit an all-time high of $5,595 per ounce last January, fell below $4,000 in June amidst the aftermath of the war between the U.S., Israel, and Iran.

Since then, prices have rebounded as U.S. inflation and employment indicators slowed and expectations for interest rate hikes weakened. Entering August, prices rose by approximately 9%, climbing back into the $4,400 range.

In particular, they have once again approached the $4,500 level, which had previously been cited as a major resistance level. Kitco reported that spot gold prices briefly surpassed $4,500 during trading on this day. Consequently, the market is focusing on whether the price will stabilize at $4,500 and the possibility of further gains.

However, given the sharp surge of 3–4% in a single day, it is necessary to leave open the possibility of short-term profit-taking.

This is because while expanding long-term Treasury bond purchases can improve market liquidity and stabilize interest rates in the short term, it does not resolve the U.S. fiscal deficit or the massive supply of government bonds itself.

In fact, the scale of these additional purchases is not large compared to the overall U.S. Treasury bond market.

According to Reuters, the U.S. Treasury can purchase up to $83 billion worth of bonds from early August to early November, including existing plans. However, the total size of the U.S. Treasury bond market exceeds $32 trillion.

Therefore, it remains to be seen whether this measure can sustainably lower long-term bond yields.

The mid-to-long-term demand base for gold remains intact. Central bank gold purchases and demand from Asian investors are prime examples.

Even amidst the recent sharp fluctuations in gold prices, central bank demand is cited as a major factor supporting the international gold market. Central bank gold purchases in the second quarter of this year totaled 289 tons, and China is also increasing its gold reserves.

Signs of a resurgence in gold demand are also appearing in India.

According to the World Gold Council (WGC), demand for gold jewelry and stock replenishment are emerging in India ahead of the festival season.

India's gold imports in July amounted to $4.16 billion, more than double the $1.97 billion recorded in June. Import volume is also estimated to have increased from 20 tons in June to 40–45 tons in July.

Funds are also flowing into gold ETFs. Net inflows into Indian gold ETFs in July amounted to approximately $163 million, and it is estimated that there was a net inflow of about $124 million during the first two weeks of August.

Analysts suggest that while high gold prices may burden demand for jewelry, investment demand continues as investors seek to utilize price corrections as buying opportunities.

Other precious metals, such as silver and platinum, also surged across the board.

On the 19th (U.S. local time), spot silver prices rose by about 4% to $65.8 per ounce. Platinum recorded a 5.1% increase to $1,800.02, and palladium rose 2.7% to $1,325.12.

A similar trend was observed in the domestic market.

At the Korea Gold Exchange, the purchase price of silver jumped 5.09% from the previous day. Platinum also rose 4.82%, surpassing the 2.72% increase in pure gold. The exchange rate is also a significant variable in the domestic gold market.

As of this morning, the won-dollar exchange rate stands at 1,393.50 won.

Since international gold is traded in dollars, a decline in the won-dollar exchange rate may mean that the rise in international gold prices is not fully reflected in domestic prices.

Nevertheless, the price of pure gold at the Korea Gold Exchange jumped 2.72% today, and the KRX gold price rose 2.95%. This can be interpreted as the surge in international gold prices outweighing the downward pressure caused by the strengthening won.

For the time being, the gold market is highly likely to react sensitively to U.S. long-term Treasury yields and dollar movements.

In particular, it is crucial to determine whether the U.S. Treasury's expanded liquidity support for long-term Treasuries will merely provide temporary market stability or lead to a downward trend in long-term interest rates.

The Federal Reserve's interest rate path is also a variable. While the FOMC minutes confirmed strong vigilance regarding inflation, recent economic indicators are moving in a direction that lowers the likelihood of further interest rate hikes.

In addition, the geopolitical situation in the Middle East surrounding the Strait of Hormuz and international oil prices could also influence the direction of gold prices.

With international gold prices rising to their highest level in two and a half months, the focus in the short term is whether the price can stabilize at the $4,500 mark. Whether the upward trend continues beyond this level or undergoes a correction due to profit-taking following the sharp rise is expected to determine the next course of events.

Real-time gold prices can be checked on the Korea Gold Exchange and the Korea Exchange (KRX) gold market.
