- On the morning of the 16th, the purchase price for one *don* (3.75g) of pure gold at the Korea Gold Exchange reached 790,000 won—an increase of 3,000 won from the previous day.
- On the KRX Gold Market, the price per gram of gold stood at 179,650 won, up 0.34% from the previous day’s closing price.
- International spot gold prices recovered to the $4,150 range, rebounding after a three-day decline.
- Despite a sharp rise in U.S. producer prices, both U.S. Treasury yields and the dollar declined.
- Gold purchases by China’s central bank and inflows into gold ETFs serve as supporting factors for the medium to long term.
Domestic gold prices have risen as international gold prices rebounded, snapping a three-day losing streak.
Although U.S. producer prices climbed more sharply than anticipated, concerns regarding the investment burden within the artificial intelligence (AI) sector spurred buying interest in U.S. Treasury bonds. As Treasury yields fell and the dollar weakened, gold prices shifted back to an upward trend.
On the morning of the 16th, the purchase price for one *don* of pure gold in the domestic market rose to 790,000 won. On the Korea Exchange (KRX) Gold Market, the price per gram of gold also increased by 600 won compared to the previous day’s closing price.
However, analysts suggest that it remains to be seen whether this rebound will lead to a sustained upward trend, given that inflationary pressures in the U.S. remain strong and international oil prices continue to hold at high levels.
◇ 790,000 won for one *don* of pure gold; 672,000 won when selling
As of 10:00 a.m. on the 16th, the price for one *don* (3.75g) of 24K pure gold, as posted by the Korea Gold Exchange, is 790,000 won for consumers looking to purchase. This marks an increase of 3,000 won (0.38%) from the final posted price of 787,000 won the previous day. The price at which consumers can sell pure gold stood at 672,000 won, remaining unchanged from the previous day’s final quoted price. A rise in international gold prices does not necessarily translate into a proportional shift in the domestic buy and sell prices for physical gold.
At the same time, the price for selling 18K gold was 494,000 won per *don* (a traditional Korean unit of weight, approximately 3.75 grams), while the price for 14K gold was 383,100 won. Both figures remained unchanged from the previous day’s final quotes. For purchases of 18K and 14K gold, prices are determined based on the specific market rates for individual products.
The price for purchasing platinum rose by 2,000 won (0.66%) to 305,000 won per *don*, while the selling price also increased by 2,000 won (0.81%) to 247,000 won.
The price for silver rose by 180 won (1.73%) to 10,380 won per *don* for purchases, and by 150 won (1.74%) to 8,640 won for sales. Domestic silver prices followed an upward trend, mirroring a sharper rebound in international silver prices compared to gold.
It is also worth noting the spread between the prices at which consumers buy and sell gold. On this day, there was a difference of 118,000 won between the purchase and sale prices for one *don* of pure gold. When trading gold, one must consider not only market fluctuations but also the pricing structure, which incorporates factors such as value-added tax (VAT) and distribution costs.
The prices provided by the Korea Gold Exchange are based on consumer-facing transactions. These should not be directly compared—based solely on the numerical figures—to the prices on the KRX (Korea Exchange) Gold Market, as the trading units and price-determination mechanisms differ.
◇ KRX Gold Market: 179,650 won per gram… reaching 180,000 won during intraday trading
Gold prices also rose on the Korea Exchange (KRX) Gold Market on the morning of the 16th. As of 10:03 a.m. today, the "Gold 99.99_1kg" product on the KRX Gold Market was trading at 179,650 won per gram—an increase of 600 won (0.34%) from the previous day's closing price of 179,050 won.
The opening price was 179,510 won. During the session, the price reached a high of 180,000 won and a low of 179,050 won. By 10:03 a.m., the trading volume had reached 13,770 grams, with a total transaction value of approximately 2.469 billion won.
These figures represent intraday data. As the final trading volume and closing price for the day have not yet been determined, it cannot be concluded that market participation has declined based on a direct comparison with the full-day figures from the previous day.
On the 15th, the KRX Gold Market closed at 179,050 won per gram, down 130 won (0.07%) from the closing price of 179,180 won on the 14th.
On the 15th, trading opened at 178,100 won; the price climbed to a high of 180,450 won and fell to a low of 177,110 won. The total daily trading volume was 228,731 grams, with a transaction value of approximately 41.076 billion won.
On the 14th, the price closed at 179,180 won per gram, marking a decline of 1,920 won (1.06%) from the previous trading day. Following a downward trend on both the 14th and 15th, the market has shown an upward movement on the morning of the 16th. On the 16th, the won-dollar exchange rate was recorded at 1,346.60 won. Domestic gold prices, denominated in Korean won, are influenced not only by international gold prices but also by the exchange rate. If the price of gold in U.S. dollars rises while the won also strengthens, the increase in the domestic price may be limited; conversely, if the won weakens, the domestic price increase could be more pronounced.
However, the exchange rate figure alone is insufficient to determine whether the won has strengthened or weakened compared to the previous day. Explaining the rise in domestic gold prices on this day requires looking at both international gold prices and domestic supply and demand dynamics.
◇ International Gold Prices Rebound After Three Days… Recovering to the $4,150 Range
On the 15th (U.S. local time), the international gold market rebounded, recovering from a sharp decline the previous day.
In the New York market, spot gold reached $4,153.42 per troy ounce as of 2:01 p.m. Eastern Time—a 1.2% increase from the previous day. Following a drop to a one-week low the day before, fresh buying interest entered the market.
U.S. gold futures for December delivery closed at $4,170.10 per ounce, up 1.5% from the previous session. It should be noted that spot prices and futures closing prices cannot be treated as identical, as they involve different trading mechanisms and are recorded at different times.
In other spot market data compiled after the U.S. market close, gold was priced at $4,168.70 per ounce—an increase of $64.20 (1.56%). While this figure is higher than the one recorded earlier at 2:00 p.m., it represents a different point in time and should be viewed as a separate observation.
Prior to this, international gold prices had fallen for three consecutive trading sessions. On the 14th, in particular, U.S. consumer price data came in higher than expected, fueling concerns over further interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve and causing a sharp drop in the price of gold.
However, a day later—despite the same inflationary pressures—the market’s reaction shifted. Broader risk-aversion sentiment across financial markets and a decline in U.S. Treasury yields exerted a greater influence on the price of gold than the inflation data itself.
When the value of the U.S. dollar falls, gold—which is traded in dollars—becomes relatively more affordable for investors using other currencies. Furthermore, a decline in U.S. Treasury yields can enhance the relative investment appeal of gold, an asset that does not pay interest.
◇ U.S. Producer Prices Surge 1.3%… Yet Treasury Yields Fall
On the 15th, it was announced that the U.S. Producer Price Index (PPI) for September had risen by 1.3% from the previous month. This figure significantly exceeded the market expectation of 0.5% and marked the largest monthly increase since March 2022.
Compared to the same month last year, producer prices rose by 6.3%. The core PPI—which excludes food and energy—also climbed 0.7% from the previous month, surpassing the market forecast of 0.3%.
Rising energy costs were the primary driver behind the surge in prices. Within the PPI components, energy prices jumped 10.8%, with gasoline prices surging 20.3%. There is growing concern that cost pressures originating in the energy sector could spread to other goods and services.
Meanwhile, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for September, released a day earlier, showed an increase of 0.6% month-on-month and 3.7% year-on-year—exceeding the market’s year-on-year forecast of 3.6%. The inflation data released over two consecutive days created a situation that warranted caution regarding the possibility of the Federal Reserve intensifying its monetary tightening stance. In fact, immediately following the release of the Consumer Price Index (CPI), market pricing—which reflects the probability of an interest rate hike this month—surged temporarily.
However, after the Producer Price Index (PPI) was released, U.S. Treasury yields fell rather than rose. This shift occurred because market focus moved away from inflation itself toward the financial burdens facing AI-related companies and the risks of a downward adjustment in the prices of financial assets.
For U.S. Treasury bonds, prices and yields move in opposite directions; when investors purchase these bonds, their prices rise while their yields decline. On this day, an influx of capital into relatively safe U.S. Treasuries helped absorb much of the shock from the inflation data.
As of 3:00 p.m. Eastern Time, the yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury note stood at 5.0870%, down 10.30 basis points (bps) from the same time the previous trading day. (One basis point is equivalent to 0.01 percentage points.)
The 10-year yield fell as low as 5.0370% during the session, but pared some of its losses as the New York stock market rebounded; therefore, it is important to distinguish between the intraday low and the rate recorded at 3:00 p.m.
The 2-year Treasury yield, which is sensitive to shifts in monetary policy, fell 5.30 bps to 4.7490%. The 30-year yield also declined, dropping 9.70 bps to 5.4270%.
The spread between the 10-year and 2-year yields narrowed from 38.80 bps the previous trading day to 33.80 bps. As long-term yields fell more sharply than short-term yields, the yield curve flattened. This suggests that bond prices have come to reflect not only immediate inflationary pressures but also concerns regarding long-term growth and risks in the financial markets.
◇ Dollar Weakens; Expectations for Interest Rate Freeze Prevail Once More
The decline in Treasury yields has also rippled through the foreign exchange market. As yields on U.S. government bonds fell, the upward momentum for the dollar weakened.
As of 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time on the 15th, the Dollar Index—which measures the greenback’s value against six major currencies—stood at 102.333, down 0.199% from the previous session.
Although the dollar strengthened briefly following the release of U.S. producer price data, it subsequently surrendered those gains. The downward pressure from falling Treasury yields proved more significant than concerns over monetary tightening driven by high inflation.
In the interest rate futures market, the view that the Federal Reserve will keep rates unchanged this month has once again become the dominant outlook.
According to the CME FedWatch tool, as of 3:51 p.m. in New York on the 15th, the market-implied probability of an interest rate hike in October stood at 27.1%, while the probability of a freeze was 72.9%.
This marks a shift in sentiment compared to the previous day, when the probability of a rate hike briefly exceeded 50% following the release of the Consumer Price Index (CPI). While remaining wary of high inflation, the market has placed greater weight on the possibility that the Fed will not immediately pursue further rate hikes.
Comments from Mary Daly, President of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, and Michelle Bowman, a member of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, also influenced this assessment. Both officials, while not entirely ruling out the need for further tightening, suggested that an immediate interest rate hike is not necessarily required.
In the metals market, some analysts have also pointed out that the Federal Reserve must take into account broader financial conditions and the economic burden when making its decisions. Peter Grant, chief metals strategist at Zaner Metals, noted that the market is increasingly focused on the potential economic costs—which could be substantial—of pushing already high interest rates even higher.
However, this does not mean the risk of further rate hikes has vanished. The market still assigns a high probability to additional monetary tightening through December. Should inflationary pressures prove persistent, the Federal Reserve’s future policy decisions could trigger a renewed rise in the dollar and Treasury yields.
◇ Preference for Safe-Haven Assets Amid AI Investment Jitters; New York Stocks Rebound
The sharp decline in U.S. Treasury yields is rooted in growing investor anxiety surrounding the AI industry.
As companies pour massive amounts of capital into building AI infrastructure, concerns have spread that investment costs and the burden of borrowing could exceed initial expectations. In particular, the financial health of cloud-related firms and the viability of recouping these investments have become key points of concern for the market.
Against this backdrop, a sell-off in tech stocks ensued, with some investors shifting their capital into government bonds. While the bond market saw a flight to safety, the stock market experienced a mixed session; a late-day influx of bargain-hunting pushed the major indices into positive territory.
On the 15th, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 52,177.69, up 556.21 points (1.08%).
The S&P 500 index rose 25.12 points (0.33%) to 7,744.06, while the Nasdaq Composite index gained 20.16 points (0.08%) to finish at 26,713.03. The Nasdaq fell by more than 1% during the session but managed to recover all of its losses. A shift in investment capital was also observed, moving away from technology stocks toward other sectors such as consumer goods, healthcare, and finance.
In the gold market, this complex environment served as a catalyst for a price rebound. As volatility in financial assets increased, interest in defensive assets grew; meanwhile, the decline in Treasury yields—driven by increased buying of government bonds—reduced the opportunity cost of holding gold.
◇ Retail sales rise, but underlying consumption slows
A closer look at U.S. economic indicators reveals mixed signals within the consumer sector.
In September, U.S. retail and food service sales increased by 0.8% from the previous month. This exceeded the market expectation of 0.3%, suggesting, on the surface, that consumer spending remains robust.
However, "core" retail sales—excluding automobiles, gasoline, building materials, and food services—grew by only 0.1%. This fell short of the 0.3% forecast and represents a significant slowdown compared to the 1.2% growth recorded the previous month.
Given the sharp rise in gasoline prices, an increase in total sales value does not necessarily reflect an expansion in the actual volume of goods purchased. It is worth examining whether high inflation is increasing the burden on consumers and weakening their underlying purchasing power.
In short, while inflation remains strong and the labor market is relatively resilient, certain consumption indicators are beginning to soften. For the Federal Reserve, this adds another layer of complexity to the balancing act between curbing inflation and managing the potential strain on the broader economy.
This situation also has a dual-sided impact on the price of gold. While an economic slowdown could boost demand for safe-haven assets, persistent high inflation might reignite concerns over monetary tightening.
◇ International Silver Prices Also Rebound; Platinum and Palladium Follow Suit
In the international precious metals market, silver, platinum, and palladium—alongside gold—all saw gains.
As of 2:00 p.m. Eastern Time on the 15th, the spot price of silver rose 2.5% to $57.05 per ounce. Platinum climbed 1.0% to $1,622.40, while palladium increased 3.4% to $1,131.25.
Separate data compiled after the close of U.S. markets showed the spot price of silver reaching $57.310 per ounce, a gain of 3.24%. This figure reflects a different time of calculation compared to the earlier data.
Like gold, silver is driven by investment demand for precious metals, but it also has a significant industrial component. Consequently, while it may rebound in an environment of falling interest rates and a weaker dollar, it could diverge from gold if concerns regarding the manufacturing sector or industrial demand intensify.
The rise in both the buying and selling prices of silver at the Korea Gold Exchange—a domestic dealer—aligns with the rebound seen in the international precious metals market. However, the rates of change may not perfectly match, as domestic consumer prices differ from international spot prices due to variations in units, exchange rates, and transaction costs.
◇ High International Oil Prices Remain an Inflationary Burden
Although gold prices have rebounded, the elevated level of international oil prices remains a factor that could increase future volatility. On the 15th, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil for November delivery closed at $97.97 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. This marks an increase of $2.88 (3.03%) from the previous session and extends a winning streak to six consecutive trading days.
In contrast, Brent crude for December delivery fell by $0.14 (0.13%) to close at $105.92 per barrel. The divergence in the performance of these two benchmarks stems from different factors affecting their respective supply and demand dynamics.
According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), U.S. commercial crude oil inventories fell by 8.56 million barrels for the week ending the 9th—a decline significantly larger than the 300,000-barrel drop anticipated by the market.
Upward pressure on U.S. crude prices was driven by a combination of production disruptions caused by hurricanes and a decline in crude oil imports. Meanwhile, Brent crude faced downward pressure following reports that sanctions on certain oil tankers might be eased, fueling expectations for improved shipping conditions.
Military tensions in the Middle East also remain unresolved. Instability in maritime transport around the Strait of Hormuz and conflicts involving Houthi rebels in Yemen continue to fuel concerns regarding energy supplies.
In fact, the recent rise in gold prices has not been driven solely by instability in the Middle East; it also reflects the impact of higher oil prices on inflation and government bond yields.
Therefore, as long as international oil prices remain at elevated levels, one should consider the interplay between defensive demand for gold and concerns over monetary tightening.
◇ China’s central bank buys gold… Long-term demand remains robust.
While U.S. interest rates and the strength of the dollar may cause short-term fluctuations in gold prices, the medium- to long-term outlook is supported by central bank gold purchases and investor demand for asset diversification.
According to an analysis of the Chinese gold market by the World Gold Council (WGC), the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) purchased an additional 23 tonnes of gold in September—the largest monthly acquisition since October 2023.
This brought China’s official gold holdings to 2,410 tonnes, with gold now accounting for 8.5% of the country’s total foreign exchange reserves.
The Chinese central bank has been buying gold for 23 consecutive months. Its total purchases for the third quarter reached 63 tonnes—the highest quarterly volume since the third quarter of 2023—bringing the total amount added so far this year to 103 tonnes.
Inflows were also seen in Chinese gold exchange-traded funds (ETFs). In September alone, 11 tonnes of gold flowed into these ETFs—marking an increase for the third consecutive month—and total holdings reached a record high of 304 tonnes by the end of the month.
Although approximately 11 billion yuan flowed into gold ETFs in September, the total assets under management (AUM) actually declined by 2% due to the drop in gold prices. It is important to distinguish between the inflow of capital and the valuation of assets under management.
For the third quarter as a whole, Chinese gold ETFs saw an inflow of approximately $3.9 billion, with gold holdings increasing by 27 tonnes. Analysts suggest that the demand for asset diversification amid a weak Chinese stock market, combined with the central bank’s sustained gold purchases, has influenced investor sentiment.
However, not all segments of physical gold demand in China are equally strong. In September, gold withdrawals from the Shanghai Gold Exchange reached 92 tonnes—a 48% increase from the previous month, yet a 22% decline compared to the same month last year.
Total wholesale gold demand for the third quarter also fell by 21% year-on-year, to 234 tonnes, largely driven by a weakening in the consumption of gold jewelry.
While demand for gold jewelry, bars, and coins has seen a partial recovery—aided by a recent correction in gold prices and inventory restocking ahead of the National Day holiday—constraints on purchasing power and consumer sentiment remain.
◇ Gold Price Outlook: Fed Commentary, the Dollar, and Treasury Yields Are Key
Although the international price of gold has climbed back above $4,100 per ounce, numerous variables remain that will determine its short-term direction.
A primary focus is the upcoming Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting scheduled for October 27–28. While the market currently leans toward the expectation that interest rates will remain unchanged, stronger-than-anticipated inflation data means the possibility of further rate hikes cannot be entirely ruled out.
In particular, remarks made by Federal Reserve Governor Kevin Warsh at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) annual meetings are being closely watched for clues regarding the future path of interest rates. Gold prices may react differently depending on whether the Fed places greater emphasis on curbing inflation or on the risks posed to financial markets and economic growth.
Upcoming U.S. economic indicators—such as import/export price data and industrial production, due on the 16th—will also be significant. These figures will help gauge the extent to which inflationary pressures are spreading from the production stage to the consumer level, and whether corporate activity can withstand high interest rates and energy costs.
From a technical analysis perspective, the $4,181-per-ounce level is identified as a short-term resistance zone for spot gold. Should the price decisively break above this range, subsequent upside targets emerge at $4,216 and $4,267.
Conversely, if gold prices shift back toward weakness, analysts suggest monitoring for support near $4,161. Should the price fall below this level, subsequent support zones to watch include $4,127, $4,107, and $4,088.
These support and resistance levels are reference ranges calculated based on historical price movements. There is no guarantee that these price levels will be reached or that a rebound will occur; such projections could be invalidated in the short term by economic indicators or policy-related statements.
Some market analysts have also taken note of the tendency for gold and Bitcoin to move in tandem. According to an analysis by Block Scholes, the 90-day rolling correlation coefficient between the two assets recently reached 0.51. This suggests that concerns regarding government debt and the depreciation of currency may be fueling demand for alternative assets.
However, a higher correlation does not necessarily mean that Bitcoin can be classified as a "safe-haven" asset like gold. Bitcoin exhibits high price volatility and maintains a positive correlation with the stock market—characteristics that distinguish it from gold as an investment.
For investors in South Korea, it is essential to consider not only international gold prices but also the KRW/USD exchange rate and price variations across different trading channels. For instance, the price of one *don* (approx. 3.75g) of pure gold at the Korea Gold Exchange reflects actual consumer transaction prices, whereas the KRX Gold Market price represents the market-determined rate per gram.
On the morning of the 16th, both markets saw gains, yet the rates of increase and the movements in buy/sell prices differed. This illustrates why the daily rebound in international gold prices cannot be applied uniformly to all forms of physical gold trading in Korea.
Ultimately, whether this rebound persists depends on which factor—upward pressure on U.S. inflation or instability in financial markets—exerts a greater influence on the direction of interest rates and the U.S. dollar. While purchases by China’s central bank and demand from exchange-traded funds (ETFs) serve as medium- to long-term support factors, gold prices may continue to fluctuate in the short term, driven by policy signals from the Federal Reserve and shifts in government bond yields.
