- U.S. gold futures for December delivery stood at $4,181.10—a decline of 0.83% from the previous week.
- Concerns over monetary tightening—driven by rising inflation and a sharp surge in international oil prices—were tempered by a weaker U.S. dollar, which limited the extent of the decline.
- Half of Wall Street experts are adopting a "wait-and-see" approach, with attention now turning to upcoming data on housing, employment, and the Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI).
Domestic and international gold prices showed mixed trends during the second week of October (October 12–17). While retail prices for pure gold at the Korea Gold Exchange and U.S. gold futures declined compared to the previous week, the closing price on the Korea Exchange (KRX) Gold Market rose. International gold prices briefly dipped below $4,100 per ounce as U.S. inflation data fueled concerns over further interest rate hikes. Although prices rebounded toward the end of the week—supported by a weaker dollar and a decline in certain government bond yields—they failed to reclaim the $4,200 level.
◇ Price for 1 "don" (3.75g) of pure gold: 786,000 won—down 9,000 won from the previous week
As of the 17th, the final posted retail price for one "don" (3.75g) of 24K pure gold at the Korea Gold Exchange was 786,000 won for consumers looking to buy. This represents a decrease of 8,000 won (1.01%) from the previous day’s final posted price of 794,000 won. For consumers looking to sell, the price was 670,000 won—a decline of 5,000 won (0.74%) from the previous day’s 675,000 won. The purchase price includes value-added tax (VAT), and all prices are based on the "GeumBangGeumBang" (Gold-Gold) app.
Compared to the final posted price of the previous week—recorded on the 10th—the purchase price for pure gold fell by 9,000 won (1.13%), from 795,000 won to 786,000 won. The selling price dropped by 12,000 won (1.76%), from 682,000 won to 670,000 won. The first posted price on the 12th was 794,000 won for purchases and 679,000 won for sales.
Prices fluctuated throughout the week. On the 12th, the purchase price for pure gold was adjusted from 794,000 won to 790,000 won; on the 13th, it fell to 786,000 won before rising back to 794,000 won. On the 14th, it moved through 787,000 won before dropping to 783,000 won—the lowest level recorded among the week’s posted prices.
On the 15th, the price rose from 788,000 won to 791,000 won, with the final posted price reaching 787,000 won. On the 16th, it recovered from 790,000 won to 794,000 won, but by Saturday the 17th, it slipped back to 786,000 won. Throughout the week, the highest purchase price for pure gold was 794,000 won and the lowest was 783,000 won—a difference of 11,000 won.
The selling price for pure gold also dropped to 673,000 won on the 14th, before rebounding to 676,000 won at one point on the 15th. The final quoted price on the 16th was 675,000 won, but it fell to 670,000 won on the 17th.
Purchase prices for 18K and 14K gold followed a similar trend. The price for selling one *don* (3.75 grams) of 18K gold dropped by 8,800 won (1.76%)—from 501,300 won on the 10th (the final quote of the previous week) to 492,500 won on the 17th. During the same period, the price for 14K gold fell by 6,900 won (1.77%), from 388,800 won to 381,900 won. For both categories, the price applied when a consumer purchases the items is based on the specific product’s market value rather than a fixed, standardized quote.
Based on the final quotes for the 17th, the price for one *don* of platinum was 305,000 won for purchase and 247,000 won for sale—both down by 4,000 won from the previous day. For silver, the purchase price was 10,280 won and the selling price was 8,560 won, reflecting decreases of 220 won and 180 won, respectively. The selling prices for platinum and silver are based on the company’s own platinum and silver bars. As price data for these items from the 12th was not included in the provided weekly price history, the weekly change could not be calculated.
The actual amount a consumer pays or receives varies depending on the timing of the purchase or sale. As of the 17th, the difference between the purchase price and the selling price for pure gold was 116,000 won; on the 10th of the previous week, this difference was 113,000 won. This figure represents the gap between the retail selling price and the buyback (purchase) price and should be distinguished from investment returns, which are driven by fluctuations in the price of gold. In particular, when buying and selling gold over a short period, one must consider not only price fluctuations but also the spread—the difference between the buying and selling prices.
◇ KRX Gold Market Rises 0.97% Week-on-Week… Hits High on the 13th
Unlike the Korea Gold Exchange, which posted prices even on Saturday, the KRX Gold Market concluded its weekly trading on Friday the 16th. The closing price per gram of gold on the KRX was 179,970 won on the 12th, 181,100 won on the 13th, 179,180 won on the 14th, 179,050 won on the 15th, and 179,190 won on the 16th.
Compared to the closing price of 177,480 won on the 8th—the final trading day of the previous week—the closing price of 179,200 won on the 16th represents an increase of 1,720 won (0.97%). Because the KRX Gold Market was closed on the 9th (Hangul Day), its weekly comparison is based on the closing price from the 8th; meanwhile, the Korea Gold Exchange posted prices on the 10th, and U.S. gold futures were traded through the 9th. Since each market uses different reference dates and timing for reflecting price changes, weekly fluctuation rates should not be interpreted as identical movements across these markets.
The KRX gold price rose from a Monday closing of 179,970 won to 181,100 won on Tuesday the 13th. Although the closing price increased for two consecutive days, it fell by 1,920 won (1.06%) on Wednesday to 179,180 won. It declined by another 130 won (0.07%) on Thursday, then rose by 150 won (0.08%) on Friday to close at 179,200 won. During the week, the intraday high was 181,500 won on the 12th, and the intraday low was 177,110 won on the 15th. The difference between the high and low was 4,390 won, representing approximately 2.48% relative to the low. Although the price reached 181,460 won on the 13th, it failed to recover to the 180,000-won level during the latter part of the week.
Based on daily closing prices, the KRX gold price fell by 1,900 won—from 181,100 won on the 13th to 179,200 won on the 16th. Consequently, while the price showed an overall increase compared to the previous week, it underwent a correction from the middle of this week onward. It should also be noted that the day with the highest closing price (the 13th) differs from the day with the highest intraday price (the 12th).
Trading activity was concentrated on the 15th. The trading volume that day reached 228,731g, accounting for approximately 32.2% of the total 709,942g traded over the five-day period. The trading value for that day also peaked for the week at 41,076,388,590 won. In other words, trading volume increased even as the price of gold fell for the second consecutive day. However, the rise in trading volume alone does not identify the specific parties selling or the underlying cause of the price decline.
On the 16th, the trading volume was 85,043g—less than half of the previous day’s figure—with a trading value of 15,298,572,190 won. The cumulative trading value over the five-day period totaled 127,662,649,950 won.
The weekly gain on the KRX was largely driven by a 3,620-won increase that occurred over the two-day period of the 12th and 13th. After giving back 2,050 won on the 14th–15th, the price rebounded by 150 won on the 16th, resulting in a net increase of 1,720 won for the week. While it is possible that changes in international prices during the market closure were reflected in the opening price on the 12th, there is no definitive data to confirm this as the cause of the rise.
The retail price for physical gold at the Korea Gold Exchange and the price on the KRX (Korea Exchange) gold market differ in terms of value-added tax (VAT) inclusion, distribution costs, and transaction structures. Consequently, it is difficult to compare the two prices through simple conversion or to attribute differences in weekly price trends solely to the market closure.
For this analysis, the final posted prices from the Korea Gold Exchange (for the 10th and 17th), the closing prices from the KRX gold market (for the 8th and 16th), and the closing prices for U.S. gold futures (for the 9th and 16th) were used. Because the reference dates for the final prices of the previous week vary by market, a direct comparison of the rates of fluctuation is not straightforward.
◇ U.S. Gold Futures: From $4,216 to $4,181
International gold futures declined compared to the previous week. According to MarketWatch, the closing price for U.S. gold futures (for December delivery) on the 9th—the final trading day of the previous week—was $4,216.30 per troy ounce. By the 16th, the price had fallen to $4,181.10, a decrease of $35.20 (0.83%). On the 16th alone, however, the price rose by $11 (0.26%) from the previous day, continuing a rebound seen toward the end of the week.
Gold futures opened at $4,220.80 on the 12th and climbed as high as $4,242.30 during the session, but ultimately closed lower at $4,190.60. The $4,242.30 recorded at this time marked the highest price among the five trading days of the week. On the 13th, the price climbed as high as $4,224.80 during the session before closing at $4,177.30. With the closing price falling for two consecutive days, the upward momentum seen earlier in the week lost steam.
The sharpest decline occurred on the 14th. Gold futures opened at $4,184.20 but dropped to as low as $4,095.00 during the session. The price closed at $4,107.90, down $69.40 (1.66%) from the previous day. The weekly low was also recorded on this day. The spread between the weekly high of $4,242.30 and the low of $4,095.00 was $147.30, representing a difference of approximately 3.60% relative to the low.
On the 15th, the price opened at $4,128.30, reached a high of $4,197.70 and a low of $4,120.90, and ultimately closed at $4,170.10—recovering some of the losses from the previous day’s sharp decline. On the 16th, the price opened at $4,192.10 and rose to $4,220.40, but subsequently retreated to $4,167.50, finishing the day at $4,181.10. Although the price traded above the $4,200 level at times, it was unable to sustain that position. As of 2:07 p.m. Eastern Time on the 16th, spot gold was down 0.1% at $4,165.12 per ounce, marking a 0.7% decline for the week. Following the close of U.S. markets, other data sources indicated a price of around $4,167.90. It is important to distinguish between spot and futures prices, as they rely on different pricing benchmarks and are recorded at different times.
Gold futures rose by $73.20 over the two-day period from the 14th to the 16th, climbing from a closing price of $4,107.90 to $4,181.10. Despite this rebound, the price remained $35.20 below the previous week’s final closing price of $4,216.30. This explains how a daily rebound and a weekly decline can occur simultaneously.
◇ Gold Shaken by Inflation Shock; Rebounds as Treasury Yields and the Dollar Fall
The primary driver behind the sharp decline in gold prices was U.S. inflation data. On the 14th, the U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) for September was reported to have risen 3.7% year-on-year, exceeding market expectations. As concerns grew that inflation would not subside easily, speculation gained traction that the Federal Reserve might implement further interest rate hikes.
While gold is often viewed as a hedge against inflation, it does not pay interest. When high inflation increases the likelihood of interest rate hikes and pushes up U.S. Treasury yields, the relative cost of holding gold rises. Furthermore, a strengthening dollar—which occurred mid-week—diminished the appeal of gold, an asset priced in dollars. This explains why the price of gold experienced significant volatility immediately following the release of the inflation data.
The Producer Price Index (PPI) for September, released on the 15th, also showed persistent inflationary pressure, rising 6.3% year-on-year. Nevertheless, the price of gold rebounded that same day. Growing instability in the U.S. stock market—particularly among semiconductor stocks—fueled a flight to safe-haven assets, while a decline in Treasury yields and the dollar provided additional support for gold buying. In essence, it was the market’s assessment of future interest rates and real yields, rather than the inflation data itself, that drove price movements. The fact that gold rebounded even on a day marked by negative inflation news suggests a significant intensification of risk-aversion among market participants.
On the 16th, it was reported that U.S. import prices for September rose 1.1% month-on-month, surpassing the market expectation of 0.8%. On a year-on-year basis, import prices increased by 8.1%. Industrial production rose by 0.7%, and manufacturing output increased by 0.3%. The combination of high inflation and robust production data fueled ongoing debate regarding the necessity for monetary tightening by the Federal Reserve.
Meanwhile, Federal Reserve Governor Kevin Warsh indicated that he would not pre-disclose any decisions regarding upcoming monetary policy meetings. His cautious stance on further interest rate hikes contributed to a rebound in gold prices. The market leaned toward the possibility that the Fed might hold rates steady at its meeting later this month.
In the interest rate futures market, expectations for a rate freeze in October gained traction. This shift reflects a partial easing of the concerns over monetary tightening that had intensified immediately following the release of inflation data. Nevertheless, the possibility of further rate hikes before the end of the year persists, keeping uncertainty surrounding gold prices alive. While short-term fears of aggressive tightening have subsided, the pressure on interest rates stemming from high inflation remains.
In the U.S. Treasury market, yield movements varied by maturity. As of 3:00 p.m. in New York on the 16th, the 10-year Treasury yield stood at 5.0970%—up 1.00 basis point (bp) from the previous day—while the 2-year yield fell by 1.30 bp to 4.7360%. The 30-year yield rose by 1.00 bp to 5.4370%. Although the 10-year yield climbed above 5.13% at one point during the day, it subsequently retreated as losses in the New York stock market deepened.
The U.S. dollar provided some support for gold prices. As of 4:00 p.m. in New York, the Dollar Index—which measures the value of the U.S. dollar against six major currencies—stood at 101.786, down 0.24% from the previous session. A weaker dollar generally reduces the cost for investors using other currencies to purchase gold. However, this weakness alone was not enough to fully offset the pressures stemming from high interest rates and inflation.
◇ Plunge in AI Tech Stocks and Oil Prices Surpassing $100… Limited Demand for Safe-Haven Assets
The sharp decline in the U.S. stock market also served as a key variable for the gold market. On the 16th, the Nasdaq Composite index closed down 2.15% at 26,140.03, while the S&P 500 fell 1.09% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 0.34%. For the week, the Nasdaq recorded a decline of 4.48%. The sell-off was fueled by concerns regarding increased borrowing by AI infrastructure companies and questions about the profitability of their investments.
The PHLX Semiconductor Sector Index fell 3.83% on the 16th, marking its eighth consecutive day of losses—a streak not seen since the 2008 financial crisis. Related stocks saw significant declines, with AI cloud company CoreWeave, for instance, dropping 11.91% in a single day. While a rise in market risk aversion might typically shift investor interest toward safe-haven assets like gold, gold prices failed to show a clear upward trend in this instance.
This is because a sharp surge in international oil prices reignited concerns regarding inflation and the outlook for interest rates. A sell-off in risk assets does not automatically translate into buying of gold; if the market becomes increasingly concerned about inflation, interest rates can rise even as the preference for safe-haven assets grows. This week, a combination of risk aversion and concerns over monetary tightening limited any rebound in gold prices. On the 16th, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil for November delivery closed at $101.41 per barrel, up 3.51% from the previous day. This marked a seven-day winning streak and pushed the price above $100 at the close for the first time since mid-September. Brent crude for December delivery rose 3.72% to $109.86, reaching its highest level in about five months.
Military tensions in the Middle East, attacks on vessels near the Strait of Hormuz, and Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries have fueled concerns regarding crude oil supply. While rising oil prices can highlight geopolitical risks—thereby stimulating demand for gold as a "safe-haven" asset—they also drive up inflation, which strengthens expectations for interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve and exerts downward pressure on gold.
Both of these conflicting forces were at play this week. While a sell-off in tech stocks and instability in the Middle East provided support for gold, high oil prices and elevated inflation kept the prospect of further monetary tightening on the table. This helps explain why, despite a significant rebound later in the week, the price of gold lost momentum again as it approached the $4,200 level.
In the domestic market, the exchange rate is another critical variable. As of 10:00 a.m. on the 18th, the KRW/USD exchange rate stood at 1,337.80 won. Since international gold prices are denominated in U.S. dollars, the price in Korean won is influenced not only by the global market price of gold itself but also by fluctuations in the exchange rate. However, it is not possible to determine the overall weekly trend—whether up or down—based solely on the exchange rate at a specific point in time.
◇ Half of Wall Street adopts a "wait-and-see" approach… Economic Indicators Next Week Likely to Determine Market Direction
Outlook for gold prices next week remains mixed. Among 12 Wall Street experts who participated in a weekly gold market survey, four (33%) predicted an increase, while two (17%) expected a decline. The remaining six (50%) either found it difficult to determine a direction or leaned toward the possibility of the price remaining range-bound—meaning half of the experts could not provide a clear outlook.
In a separate survey of 139 individual investors, 60 (43%) anticipated a rise, while 63 (45%) expected a decline; 16 (12%) predicted the price would stay flat. Although the split between bullish and bearish sentiment was tight, those expecting a decline slightly outnumbered those expecting an increase. It should be noted that such survey results merely reflect investor sentiment and do not guarantee actual price movements. Furthermore, given the relatively small sample size, one should not overinterpret minor differences in these percentages.
In terms of price levels, the area around $4,200 per ounce is a key point to watch. Some analysts have identified a short-term resistance range for spot gold between $4,185 and $4,201, and a support range between $4,148 and $4,132. The analysis suggests that if the price stabilizes above $4,200, expectations for further gains could grow; conversely, if the support level fails, downward pressure may intensify. These figures serve only as technical reference points.
Interpretations among market experts also vary. Some highlight the potential for a medium- to long-term rise, citing factors such as gold purchases by central banks, a weaker U.S. dollar, and geopolitical risks. On the other hand, other experts argue that it is premature to conclude the market correction has ended based solely on a rebound late in the week; they suggest waiting to see if the decline in government bond yields proves sustained. There is a general consensus that significant uncertainty surrounds the short-term direction of asset prices.
While the U.S. economic calendar for next week is less packed than this week’s, it still includes indicators that could shift interest rate expectations. On the 20th, data on September housing starts, building permits, and home sales contracts will be released. As the housing market is highly sensitive to interest rates, these figures will offer insight into how elevated borrowing costs are affecting the real economy. Previously, housing starts stood at an annualized rate of 1.275 million units, with building permits at 1.403 million.
Also of note are the weekly initial jobless claims, due on the 22nd. The previous reading was 199,000, suggesting no sharp spike in layoffs. A significant increase in claims could fuel concerns about a cooling labor market, while a low figure would reinforce the view that the labor market remains resilient despite monetary tightening.
On the 23rd, S&P Global will release its preliminary Purchasing Managers' Indices (PMI) for the manufacturing, services, and composite sectors for October, alongside the final University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index. The previous composite, manufacturing, and services PMIs were 58.4, 55.9, and 58.8, respectively. The final consumer sentiment reading will provide a look at how households perceive the economy and their expectations regarding inflation. In particular, if inflation expectations rise again, it could dampen hopes for interest rate cuts. As both business activity data and consumer sentiment figures are set to be released, they are likely to influence the outlook for interest rates. Looking ahead, the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting is scheduled for the 27th–28th, followed by the release of the U.S. Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index on the 29th. Stronger signals of an economic slowdown could bolster expectations for a pause in interest rate hikes, thereby supporting demand for gold. Conversely, if inflationary pressures are reaffirmed, it may strengthen the outlook for further rate hikes by year-end, which could weigh on gold prices.
This week, domestic and international gold markets showed different trajectories compared to the previous week. At the Korea Gold Exchange, the price of pure gold rebounded mid-week but fell again by Saturday. Meanwhile, the KRX Gold Market peaked on Tuesday; although it subsequently pared some of its gains, it closed at a higher level than the previous week. U.S. gold futures saw a sharp decline on Wednesday, followed by a two-day rebound, though they failed to recover to their opening levels from the start of the week.
The direction of gold prices next week will depend on the persistence of U.S. inflation and any shifts in the Federal Reserve’s interest rate outlook. It will also be important to monitor the movements of the U.S. dollar and Treasury yields, especially as international oil prices and the situation in the Middle East fuel concerns over inflation. Whether gold can make another attempt to reach $4,200—and whether it can maintain support near the $4,100 level—will serve as key benchmarks for the next phase in the global gold market.
