- International Gold Futures Down 0.7%... Inflation Concerns Amid Rising Oil Prices
- Weekly 1% Decline on Middle East Tensions and Fed Tightening Outlook
- Today's Gold Price (Korea Gold Exchange Pure Gold Unchanged... Purchase Price Falls)

International gold prices closed the week lower. International oil prices rose as military tensions between the U.S. and Iran escalated again, while concerns over inflation and the prospect that the U.S. Federal Reserve's tightening stance could be prolonged pressured gold prices. However, market analysts continue to suggest that steady gold purchases by central banks and geopolitical uncertainty will support gold prices in the long term.

On the 10th (U.S. local time), August delivery gold futures traded on the New York Commodity Exchange (COMEX) fell 0.7% from the previous trading day to $4,113.70 per ounce.

Spot gold prices also dropped 0.4% to $4,103.23 per ounce as of 2:10 p.m. Eastern Time. On a weekly basis, it fell 1.7%, marking a decline after just one week.

The market views the rise in international oil prices, driven by renewed escalation of the conflict between the U.S. and Iran, as the most significant variable. The International Energy Agency (IEA) recently analyzed that if the conflict between the U.S. and Iran expands, it could impact the outlook for global crude oil supply next year. In fact, international oil prices continued their upward trend this week, reflecting concerns over supply disruptions.

Rising oil prices stimulate inflation expectations. If inflationary pressures increase, central banks are more likely to maintain benchmark interest rates at high levels for longer or proceed with further hikes. While gold is a representative safe-haven asset, it does not pay interest, meaning its investment appeal tends to decrease relatively in a high-interest rate environment.

The market believes that the recent rebound in energy prices will influence the Federal Reserve's policy decisions. According to CME FedWatch, the market is currently pricing in a probability of a benchmark interest rate hike in September at approximately 69%.

On a weekly basis, it fell 1.7%, marking a decline in strength after just one week. In the previously released minutes of the June Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting, some members expressed concern over high inflation and mentioned the possibility of further interest rate hikes. However, they ultimately decided to keep rates unchanged, maintaining the stance that they would monitor future price and employment indicators.

Investor interest is shifting to the U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Producer Price Index (PPI) to be released next week, as well as Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh's congressional testimony. The market views these schedules as key variables that will determine the direction of monetary policy in the second half of the year.

In Asian physical markets, trends varied by country. In India, discount sales expanded due to weak gold prices, while in China, physical demand remained relatively stable as the central bank continued its steady gold purchases. The People's Bank of China continued its gold buying stance by increasing its gold reserves in June.

Other precious metals showed mixed trends. The spot price of silver fell 0.7% to $59.56 per ounce. In contrast, platinum rose 0.4% to $1,616.72, and palladium rose 2.2% to $1,274.50.

Domestic gold prices remained flat on the 11th.

As of 9 a.m. on this day, the purchase price of one don (24K, 3.75g) of pure gold at the Korea Gold Exchange was 871,000 won, unchanged from the previous day.

On the other hand, the selling price of one don of pure gold fell 4,000 won (0.55%) from the previous trading day to 730,000 won.

The selling price of 18K gold dropped 2,900 won (0.54%) to 536,600 won, and the selling price of 14K gold also fell 2,300 won (0.55%) to 416,100 won. The product market price applies when buying 18K and 14K gold.

Meanwhile, market analysts suggest that the long-term appeal of gold investment remains intact despite short-term corrections.

In its recent third-quarter precious metals outlook report, StoneX cited geopolitical uncertainty surrounding the U.S. and Iran, along with the Federal Reserve's tightening stance, as the primary causes of the recent weakness in gold prices. While it was initially expected that gold prices would fall below $4,000 by the end of the year, the firm assessed that the decline occurred sooner than anticipated. The report analyzed that as stock market volatility has recently increased, a phenomenon has emerged where investors are selling gold to offset losses in risky assets. The explanation is that gold's role as a safe haven asset has weakened somewhat in the short term, as it is utilized as both an inflation hedge and a liquid asset for securing cash.

StoneX assessed that the gold market is currently reacting most sensitively to the Federal Reserve's interest rate outlook. While the market is reflecting the possibility of further tightening following recent higher-than-expected core Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) prices, gold prices are maintaining a relatively stable trend.

However, it predicted that the future direction of gold prices will be largely determined by geopolitical tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz and the unfolding of conflicts in the Middle East. It forecasted that while the price is likely to fluctuate around the $4,000 mark in the short term, the possibility of a sharp further decline is not high.

StoneX also noted the World Gold Council (WGC) survey on central banks. Approximately 89% of the central banks participating in the survey projected that global gold reserves would increase within the next year, and nearly half indicated they would expand their own gold holdings. Over 70% of respondents also anticipated that the proportion of gold in their foreign exchange reserves would rise over the next five years.

The report assessed that the fact that central banks have net purchased approximately 4,000 tons of gold over the past four years remains a key factor supporting the gold market. It predicted that central banks' gold purchases would not easily reverse as long as geopolitical risks and movements toward de-dollarization persist.

The report also presented an interesting analysis regarding China's gold demand. It suggested that considering China's mining production, recycling, and import volumes, there is a possibility of a significant discrepancy between official statistics and actual gold reserves, and that strategic gold stockpiling at the government level may be higher than market expectations.

The report maintained a positive long-term outlook on the silver market. While it is highly likely that silver will move in the $55–$60 range in the short term, following the price of gold, the report forecasts that increased industrial demand driven by the expansion of electric vehicles, solar power, and AI semiconductors will support the price.

In particular, the expansion of AI data centers, next-generation semiconductors, electric vehicles, and the solar power industry was cited as a factor that will significantly boost future silver consumption. The analysis suggests that supply shortages may intensify in the mid-to-long term, as mining supply is limited while industrial demand is expected to rise steadily.

StoneX identified the resurgence of tensions in the Middle East, the prolonged war in Ukraine, and continued gold purchases by central banks as factors driving future gold price increases. Conversely, it predicted that the establishment of a ceasefire, stabilization of the stock market, and further tightening by the Federal Reserve could act as a burden on gold prices.

The market views the U.S. CPI and PPI figures to be released next week, along with remarks from Federal Reserve officials, as the biggest variables determining the short-term direction of gold prices. However, given geopolitical risks and the continued structural gold purchases by central banks, the prevailing view is that gold will maintain its status as a representative safe-haven asset in the mid-to-long term.
