- International gold futures down 2.31% over the week¡¦ $4,113.70 ¡æ $4,018.80

- Down $94.90 over the week¡¦ Attention on whether the $4,000 level will hold

- Domestic pure gold purchase price drops 3.21% from 871,000 won to 843,000 won

- Gold prices pressured by soaring oil prices, strong dollar, and concerns over interest rate hikes

- 79% of Wall Street experts predict a decline next week¡¦ bearish outlook prevails

International gold futures prices fell by more than 2% over the past week. Despite slowing inflation in the U.S., soaring international oil prices, a strong dollar, and robust economic indicators dragged down gold prices as they fueled concerns about further interest rate hikes by the U.S. Federal Reserve (Fed).

The domestic gold market was also affected by the decline in international gold prices. The price of one don (unit of weight) of pure gold at the Korea Gold Exchange fell by more than 3%, dropping from 871,000 won on the 11th to 843,000 won on the 18th.

Towards the end of the week, international gold prices fell below the psychological support level of $4,000 per ounce before rebounding, driven by bargain buying and short covering. However, analysts suggest it is too early to judge a full-scale trend reversal, as the dollar and U.S. Treasury yields remain at high levels.

According to Financial Markets and MarketWatch on the 18th, August delivery gold futures traded on the New York Mercantile Exchange fell by $94.90 (2.31%) over the week, dropping from $4,113.70 per ounce on the 10th to $4,018.80 on the 17th.

Spot gold prices also traded around $4,017 per ounce on the 17th. Spot gold prices fell to the $3,900 range during the trading session before recovering the $4,000 mark, but failed to reverse the week's weakness.

Gold prices attempted to rise early in the week, climbing to the $4,120 range per ounce, but were unable to sustain the upward trend.

International oil prices surged as military clashes between the U.S. and Iran continued and concerns grew over potential disruptions to crude oil supply surrounding the Strait of Hormuz. Concerns spread that rising energy prices could reignite inflationary anxiety in the U.S., while expectations strengthened that the Federal Reserve might maintain monetary tightening for an extended period.

Gold prices widened their losses as U.S. retail sales came in stronger than expected. Spot gold prices fell to the $3,959 range by the end of the week.

Subsequently, buying at lower prices and short covering flowed in from the high $3,900s, allowing prices to recover the $4,000 mark. Spot gold rebounded to around $4,017, but was unable to fully recover the previous losses.

- Domestic Pure Gold Prices Also Drop by Over 3% in a Week

Domestic gold prices also showed weakness over the past week.

According to the Korea Gold Exchange, the purchase price of one don (24K, 3.75g) of pure gold fell by 28,000 won (3.21%) from 871,000 won on the 11th to 843,000 won on the 18th.

During the same period, the selling price of pure gold dropped by 22,000 won (3.01%) from 730,000 won to 708,000 won.

The selling prices for 18K and 14K gold also declined in tandem.

The selling price of 18K gold fell by 16,200 won (3.02%) from 536,600 won on the 11th to 520,400 won on the 18th.

The selling price of 14K gold fell by 12,500 won (3.00%) from 416,100 won to 403,600 won. When buying 18K and 14K gold, the market price applies.

Domestic pure gold prices showed weakness from the beginning of the week. On the 13th, the buying price fell from 864,000 won to 860,000 won during trading, and on the 14th, it fluctuated between 845,000 and 846,000 won.

On the 15th, it rose to 852,000 won at one point but subsequently fell to 844,000 won. On the 16th, it dropped from 850,000 won to 838,000 won, and on the 17th, it fell to 830,000 won, marking a weekly low.

On the 18th, influenced by a rebound in international gold prices, it rose to 843,000 won, partially recovering the weekly losses.

The selling price of pure gold also fell from the 720,000 won range to 700,000 won during the week before rebounding to 708,000 won on the 18th.

Domestic gold prices are simultaneously influenced by international gold prices and the won-dollar exchange rate. Even if international gold prices fall, if the won-dollar exchange rate rises, the decline in domestic gold prices converted into won may be reduced. Conversely, even if international gold prices rise, if the won strengthens, the extent of the increase in domestic gold prices may be limited.

The prices presented by the Korea Gold Exchange are retail market rates that consumers refer to when buying and selling pure gold products. Because the trading units and price calculation structures differ from international spot or futures gold prices, the rates of fluctuation do not perfectly match.

- Gold Price Rebound Limited Despite Inflation Slowdown

The U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) for June, released this week, provided temporary support for gold prices.

U.S. consumer prices in June fell from the previous month, and core inflation remained flat. Concerns about further interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve have somewhat subsided as interpretations emerged that inflationary pressures are easing.

Following the release of the CPI, spot gold prices briefly recovered to $4,050 per ounce. When interest rates fall or concerns about monetary tightening ease, the relative attractiveness of gold, which does not pay interest, increases.

However, the rebound did not last long.

Buying interest in gold weakened as U.S. Treasury yields remained high following the release of the Producer Price Index, and investors preferred the dollar and cash equivalents.

In particular, selling pressure on gold prices increased as U.S. retail sales came in stronger than expected. As the perception spread that the U.S. economy is robust enough to withstand high interest rates, the likelihood of the Fed lifting its tightening stance also decreased.

Unlike bonds or deposits, gold does not pay interest. When U.S. benchmark interest rates and Treasury yields rise, the opportunity cost of holding gold increases.

The strong dollar also pressured gold prices. Since international gold is traded in dollars, a rise in the dollar's value increases the cost of purchasing gold for investors using other currencies.

Ultimately, while the slowdown in consumer and producer prices supported gold prices, it could not overcome the impact of rising oil prices, robust consumption indicators, and a strong dollar.

- The shock from oil prices was greater than the demand for safe-haven assets.

The conflict between the United States and Iran was also a major variable in the gold market this week.

Typically, demand for gold as a safe-haven asset increases when geopolitical tensions rise. However, this time, the surge in international oil prices due to the military conflict acted as a greater burden on gold prices.

As tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz intensified, concerns about disruptions in crude oil supply spread, causing international oil prices to skyrocket.

Rising oil prices lead to increases in gasoline, transportation costs, and corporate production costs. This could drive consumer prices up again.

If inflationary pressures intensify, the Federal Reserve is likely to maintain interest rates at high levels for an extended period or proceed with further hikes. In this scenario, the strengthening of the dollar and government bond yields limits the upside potential of gold prices.

Thu Lan Nguyen, Head of Foreign Exchange and Commodities Research at Commerzbank, analyzed that expectations for interest rate hikes are likely to persist for the time being, considering the continued escalation of conflicts in the Middle East and the risk of soaring energy prices.

Consequently, he predicted that the potential for further upside in gold prices could be limited in the short term.

Independent precious metals analyst Jesse Colombo also predicted that gold prices would react sensitively to oil price movements while the conflict with Iran continues.

However, he assessed that a significant number of negative factors, including geopolitical risks, have already been reflected in gold prices. He explained that although gold prices fell below $4,000 several times, buying pressure repeatedly flowed in during the $3,980–$3,960 range.

- Diverging Outlooks Over $4,000 Support Level

The market views $4,000 per ounce as a key price level that will determine the direction of gold prices next week.

Over the past month, gold prices have fallen below $4,000 several times, but have rebounded each time driven by bargain buying.

Rich Chekan, President and COP of Asset Strategies International, assessed that while gold prices have tested the $4,000 support level multiple times over the past two months, consistent buying pressure has emerged at this price level.

He predicted that while it may be difficult to expect a sustained upward trend, there is a possibility of further rebound if the $4,000 level is maintained.

On the other hand, Adrian Day, President of Adrian Day Asset Management, viewed it as difficult for gold prices to break through upwards unless the Federal Reserve sends a clear signal that it will halt interest rate hikes or strong gold buying by central banks is confirmed.

** Mark Chandler, Managing Director at Bannockburn Global Forex, noted that gold prices encountered resistance near the 20-day moving average of $4,071 and raised the possibility of retesting the year's low of around $3,943 recorded in late June.

Alex Kupčikevich, Senior Market Analyst at FxPro, also assessed that gold prices are continuing a downtrend, making lower highs and lows since the peak in late January.

He predicted that while a short-term rebound may occur due to buying demand coming in below $4,000, the possibility of further decline remains in the medium term.

CPM Group issued a sell recommendation when gold was trading around $3,980, setting a short-term target of $3,820 per ounce by the end of July. The stop-loss threshold was set at $4,090.

Analysis suggests that the short-term trend remains downward, as gold prices have generally been lowering their highs and lows since the end of January this year.

- 79% of Wall Street Experts Predict "Down Next Week"

Wall Street experts generally view gold prices for next week negatively.

In a weekly survey conducted by Kitco News targeting 14 experts, only one respondent (7%) predicted a rise in gold prices.

79% (11 respondents) forecasted a decline in gold prices next week. The remaining 14% (2 respondents) predicted sideways movement.

Outlook among retail investors was mixed.

Among the 169 participants in the Kitco online survey, 40% (68 respondents) predicted a rise in gold prices. 36% (61 respondents) predicted a decline, while 24% (40 respondents) predicted sideways movement.

Experts interpreted the fact that gold prices failed to rise despite favorable factors such as slowing inflation as a signal of short-term weakness.

Concerns have also been raised that if the correction in tech stocks and risky assets escalates into a widespread sell-off, gold could also become a target for selling to secure cash. In the early stages of sharp financial market volatility, gold may face selling pressure to offset losses in other assets, even though it is a safe haven asset.

On the other hand, retail investors maintained a relatively more optimistic outlook than Wall Street, noting that gold prices have repeatedly rebounded from the $4,000 level.

- Focus on ECB, PMI, and Middle East Situation Next Week

With few major U.S. economic indicators scheduled for release next week, the gold market is likely to react more sensitively to news regarding oil prices and the Middle East.

The market is paying close attention to the European Central Bank (ECB)'s monetary policy decision and the press conference by ECB President Christine Lagarde. The market believes there is a high probability that the ECB will keep the benchmark interest rate unchanged at this meeting.

The U.S. weekly jobless claims data will also be released. If the employment market appears stronger than expected, expectations for a U.S. interest rate hike could rise again.

Following this, the preliminary July S&P Global Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) and U.S. June new home sales figures are also scheduled to be released.

If the manufacturing and service sectors perform better than expected, the outlook that the Federal Reserve will maintain high interest rates for an extended period could be reinforced. Conversely, if signs of an economic slowdown become more pronounced, Treasury yields and the dollar could fall, potentially providing an opportunity for a rebound in gold prices.

The situation in the Middle East and international oil prices are also key variables.

Demand for safe-haven assets could increase if the conflict between the U.S. and Iran escalates or if there are disruptions in crude oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz. However, if oil prices surge further, concerns about inflation could grow, potentially placing a burden on gold prices instead.

In the short term, whether the $4,000 per ounce support level holds is crucial. If this price level is maintained, gold could attempt a rebound to the $4,050 level and the $4,070 range, where the 20-day moving average is located. Conversely, if the price clearly falls below $4,000, the next support levels are cited as the range of $3,980–$3,960 and the year's low of around $3,943. There are also forecasts that if even these levels are breached, a decline to $3,900 and $3,820 could open up.

The domestic gold market is also expected to be simultaneously influenced by international gold prices and the won-dollar exchange rate. Even if international gold prices rebound, the rise in domestic pure gold prices may be limited if the won strengthens. Conversely, even if international gold prices show weakness, the decline in domestic prices could be reduced if the exchange rate rises.

Although international gold futures and domestic pure gold prices fell in tandem this week, the fact that buying interest was confirmed around $4,000 per ounce towards the end of the week is considered a factor that could limit further sharp declines.

However, as concerns regarding rising oil prices and further U.S. interest rate hikes have not been resolved, there is a possibility that gold price volatility will remain high next week. Real-time gold prices can be checked at the Korea Gold Exchange and the Korea Exchange (KRX) gold market.
