Domestic gold prices rose on the morning of the 16th.

At the Korea Gold Exchange, the purchase price for one *don* (3.75g) of pure gold climbed into the 830,000-won range. Gold prices also rebounded in the Korea Exchange (KRX) gold market, recovering to the 189,000-won-per-gram level.

Overnight, international gold prices dipped slightly ahead of the US Federal Reserve's monetary policy decision. A strong dollar, rising US Treasury yields, and climbing international oil prices exerted downward pressure on gold prices.

The domestic market, however, moved differently. As the KRW/USD exchange rate rose into the 1,370-won range, the gold price in won terms increased despite the drop in international gold prices. According to the Korea Gold Exchange, the purchase price for one *don* (3.75g) of pure gold stood at 832,000 won as of 10:00 a.m. today.

This marks a 6,000-won increase from the previous day's final posted price of 826,000 won, representing a rise of 0.72%.

The selling price for pure gold is 705,000 won, up 3,000 won from the previous day's final posted price of 702,000 won—an increase of 0.43%.

The magnitude of the increase is greater when compared to the morning of the previous day.

At 10:00 a.m. on the 15th, the purchase price for one *don* of pure gold was 820,000 won. It subsequently rose to 826,000 won during trading hours and climbed further to 832,000 won this morning.

Prices for 18K and 14K gold also rose.

The selling price for 18K gold rose by 2,200 won (0.42%) to 518,200 won, while the price for 14K gold increased by 1,700 won (0.42%) to 401,900 won.

Platinum and silver prices are also on the rise.

The purchase price for one *don* of platinum rose by 5,000 won (1.47%) to 340,000 won, and the selling price increased by 4,000 won (1.45%) to 276,000 won.

The purchase price for one *don* of silver rose by 210 won (1.78%) to 11,800 won, while the selling price increased by 170 won (1.73%) to 9,820 won.

Gold prices also rebounded in the KRX gold market.

As of 10:00 a.m. today, the 1kg gold product on the KRX gold market is trading at 189,220 won per gram. It rose by 1,220 won (0.65%) from the previous day's closing price of 188,000 won.

The opening price was 188,400 won. During the trading session, it reached a high of 189,240 won and a low of 188,200 won.

At the time of reporting, the trading volume stood at 23,927 grams, with a total trading value of approximately 4.512 billion won.

The KRX gold price closed at 188,000 won per gram the previous day. It rebounded this morning, climbing back into the 189,000-won range.

Recent trends show that the domestic gold price does not always move in lockstep with international gold prices.

The KRX gold price closed at 189,160 won per gram on the 11th before falling to 188,000 won on the 14th. It closed at 188,000 won again on the 15th, then rose back to the 189,000-won range this morning.

At the Korea Gold Exchange, the purchase price for one *don* (3.75g) of pure gold rose from 820,000 won yesterday morning to 832,000 won today.

However, a direct comparison of the absolute prices between the Korea Gold Exchange and the KRX should be avoided.

The price quoted to consumers for purchasing one *don* of pure gold at the Korea Gold Exchange includes value-added tax (VAT) and distribution costs. In contrast, prices in the KRX gold market are determined by investor buy and sell orders on a per-gram basis.

Everything from trading units to price-setting mechanisms differs between the two. Therefore, rather than interpreting the price gap as an indication that domestic gold is overvalued or undervalued, it is more appropriate to examine how much the price has moved in each market compared to the previous day.

One of the most critical variables in understanding domestic gold prices today is the exchange rate. The morning won-dollar exchange rate is hovering around 1,371.20 won per dollar.

International gold is traded in dollars. When converting this value into won for the domestic market, the won-dollar exchange rate is factored in.

For instance, even if the international gold price remains constant, a depreciation of the won—causing the exchange rate to rise—increases the amount of won required to purchase the same quantity of gold. Conversely, if the won strengthens, the rise in the domestic price may be mitigated even if international gold prices increase.

This exchange rate effect was clearly evident in the market trends on the 16th.

Overnight, the international spot gold price fell by 0.1%, and U.S. gold futures dropped by 0.4%. However, domestic prices—specifically the pure gold price at the Korea Gold Exchange and the KRX gold price—both rose.

Given that the decline in international gold prices was modest, the rise of the won-dollar exchange rate to the 1,370-won level appears to have supported the gold price in won terms.

Consequently, if domestic investors judge domestic gold price movements solely based on international market rates, their expectations may differ from actual market prices.

If international gold prices and the exchange rate move in the same direction, the volatility of domestic prices can intensify. Conversely, if they move in opposite directions, the fluctuation of one factor can offset that of the other.

The situation on this day resembled the latter scenario.

Although international gold prices fell, the rise in the won-dollar exchange rate partially offset this decline, resulting in an upward trend for domestic gold prices.

Attention in the international gold market is currently focused on the Federal Reserve.

According to Reuters on the 15th (local time), the spot gold price stood at $4,293.29 per ounce as of 1:45 p.m. Eastern Time, down 0.1% from the previous session.

The day prior, the price had dropped to its lowest level since August 7. U.S. gold futures also closed 0.4% lower at $4,332.80 per ounce.

The factors weighing on gold prices are relatively clear.

The dollar strengthened, and U.S. Treasury yields climbed to high levels. Concerns about inflation also mounted due to rising international oil prices.

Notably, the yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury note surpassed 5% during the trading session, reaching its highest level since 2007.

This combination creates a challenging environment for gold.

Gold does not pay interest or dividends. When Treasury yields rise, the relative investment appeal of bonds—which do pay interest—increases.

This does not mean the intrinsic value of gold is falling; rather, it means investors have a greater incentive to choose interest-bearing safe-haven assets over gold.

A strengthening dollar adds further pressure on gold prices.

Gold is traded in dollars on the international market. When the value of the dollar rises, the cost of purchasing dollar-denominated gold can become relatively higher for investors using other currencies, such as the euro or the yen.

This explains why gold prices have failed to show a clear upward trend recently, despite geopolitical uncertainties.

Another variable driving market movements this week is the price of international oil.

Supply concerns intensified after crude oil shipments were halted at the Red Sea port of Yanbu in Saudi Arabia and operations at some Libyan oil fields faced disruptions.

International oil prices rose again as fears grew that disruptions to crude supply routes could be prolonged.

Geopolitical instability in the Middle East is typically viewed as a factor favorable to gold, a safe-haven asset.

This is because heightened risks—such as war, armed conflict, or financial market instability—often prompt investors to reduce their exposure to risk assets and seek out assets like gold.

However, a somewhat different dynamic is currently at play in the gold market. When issues arise in crude oil supplies, oil prices rise. Rising oil prices increase transportation and production costs and can also impact consumer prices.

Increased inflationary pressure raises the likelihood that the central bank will either raise the benchmark interest rate or maintain high rates for a longer period.

This exerts a counteracting force on gold.

While geopolitical instability can drive up gold prices by boosting demand for safe-haven assets, that same instability acts as a downward pressure on gold prices if it pushes up oil prices and leads to higher interest rates.

This explains why, in the recent international gold market, rising oil prices have not immediately translated into higher gold prices.

This week, the latter effect was particularly strong.

The combination of rising oil prices and U.S. inflation data rapidly strengthened expectations for a Federal Reserve rate hike.

The U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) for August rose 0.4% month-over-month, up from the 0.1% increase seen in July.

With inflation already exceeding the Fed's target, the additional rise in energy prices led financial markets to place greater weight on the possibility of the Fed raising the benchmark rate at the upcoming meeting.

Sentiment shifted dramatically in a Reuters survey of economists.

Of the 101 economists surveyed, 86 predicted that the Fed would raise interest rates at this meeting.

This marks a significant shift compared to just a week earlier, when the prevailing view in the same survey was that rates would remain unchanged.

Financial markets are increasingly pricing in the likelihood that the Fed will raise the benchmark rate by 0.25 percentage points, adjusting the target range for the policy rate to 3.75–4.00%.

Gold prices have also been moving in anticipation of this scenario.

Spot gold, which hovered around $4,400 per ounce last week, has fallen to the $4,300 level this week. After recording $4,312.59 per ounce on the 14th, the price fell to $4,293.29 on the 15th.

While the magnitude of the decline over these two days is not significant, market caution has heightened because the price of gold has dipped below the $4,300 mark.

This movement was largely driven by the simultaneous rise of the dollar and Treasury yields amidst growing expectations for interest rate hikes.

Market attention is now shifting to the next phase.

The focus has moved beyond the question of whether rates will be raised to the policy direction the Federal Reserve outlines following the hike.

This is because the market has already largely priced in the likelihood of a 0.25 percentage point increase.

Even if rates rise as expected, if the Fed characterizes the move as a one-off measure, the market might lower its assessment of the risk of further tightening.

In that scenario, we could see a shift in the trends of Treasury yields and the dollar—factors that have recently been weighing on gold prices.

Conversely, the situation changes if the Federal Reserve strongly emphasizes inflation risks and leaves the door open for further interest rate hikes.

The market would then need to recalibrate its expectations regarding future interest rate levels, rather than focusing solely on the immediate move.

If Treasury yields remain high or rise further—and the dollar continues to strengthen—gold prices will face continued downward pressure.

Therefore, simply checking whether rates are "raised" or "frozen" is insufficient to gauge the future direction of gold prices following the FOMC meeting.

One must also examine the Fed's official statement, its outlook on future rates, and comments made during the press conference.

The interest rate projections presented at this meeting are another key variable.

Market expectations regarding interest rates could shift depending on the strength of the consensus regarding the need for future hikes.

If signals emerge suggesting that this hike is likely a one-off event, it could alleviate some of the pressure on the gold market caused by recent monetary tightening.

Conversely, if the need for further tightening is emphasized due to high inflation, gold prices could come under renewed pressure.

However, there are noteworthy aspects to recent gold price movements.

Despite the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield surpassing 5%, a strong dollar, and a sharp rise in expectations for interest rate hikes, spot gold continues to trade in the high $4,200 range.

This suggests that the decline has been relatively limited, especially considering the confluence of factors unfavorable to gold.

While gold prices have retreated from the $4,400 level, they are fluctuating between the high $4,200s and low $4,300s rather than experiencing a sharp collapse.

This indicates that interest rates and the dollar are not the only factors influencing the gold market.

Geopolitical risks in the Middle East remain a significant factor. National debt levels and fiscal health across the globe are also variables that determine long-term demand for gold.

Central bank gold purchases and investment demand via gold exchange-traded funds (ETFs) can also influence the medium- to long-term trajectory of international gold prices.

In particular, interest rates and national debt affect gold prices over different time horizons.

In the short term, rising interest rates increase the opportunity cost of holding gold; this is currently the most direct factor exerting downward pressure on gold prices.

However, if high interest rates persist for an extended period, the interest burden on governments also rises.

When national debt is high, a rise in government bond yields inevitably increases the costs associated with issuing new bonds and refinancing existing debt.

Should market concerns regarding fiscal sustainability intensify, other characteristics of gold may come to the fore.

Gold is neither the debt of a specific corporation nor a bond issued by a particular government; it is a tangible asset not directly linked to the default risk of an issuer.

Consequently, while short-term interest rate hikes may suppress gold prices, long-term fiscal instability can boost demand for gold.

The international gold market is currently subject to these conflicting factors.

Expectations of interest rate hikes, high government bond yields, and a strong dollar act as short-term headwinds.

Conversely, geopolitical uncertainty, the fiscal burdens of major nations, and concerns regarding the long-term value of currencies serve to support gold demand.

How this balance of forces shifts following the FOMC meeting will be crucial.

Movements in international gold prices may not translate directly to the domestic market.

This is because the exchange rate acts as an additional variable in the domestic context.

Even if international gold prices fall further after the FOMC meeting, a simultaneous rise in the won-dollar exchange rate could mitigate the decline in gold prices denominated in won. Conversely, even if international gold prices rebound, a significant drop in the exchange rate caused by a strengthening won could result in a smaller rise in domestic gold prices compared to the international market.

Market conditions on the morning of the 16th illustrate this scenario.

While the international spot price of gold fell to $4,293.29 per ounce, the purchase price for one *don* (3.75g) of pure gold at the Korea Gold Exchange rose to 832,000 won.

The KRX gold price also rose 0.65% from the previous day's closing price to 189,220 won per gram.

The won-dollar exchange rate stood at the 1,371.20 won level.

Therefore, when checking domestic gold prices, it is necessary to observe the direction in which both international gold prices and the won-dollar exchange rate are moving, rather than looking at them in isolation.

This explains why a drop in international gold prices does not necessarily guarantee a decline in domestic pure gold prices.

Divergences between domestic and international price movements were also observed for other precious metals, such as silver and platinum.

According to Reuters, the international spot price of silver rose 0.3% to $63.41 per ounce on the 15th.

Platinum rose 0.7% to $1,772.32 per ounce, while palladium increased 0.1% to $1,294.14.

Prices for silver and platinum also rose at the Korea Gold Exchange that day.

The purchase price for one *don* of silver rose by 210 won from the previous day's final posted price to 11,800 won, while the price of platinum increased by 5,000 won to 340,000 won.

Unlike gold, silver and platinum are heavily influenced by industrial demand.

Consequently, one cannot simply assume they will move in the same direction as gold based solely on the fact that they are precious metals; one must consider various factors, including economic outlooks, industrial demand, and supply conditions. The FOMC meeting is now the most immediate variable determining the short-term direction of international gold prices.

If the Federal Reserve raises the benchmark interest rate by 0.25 percentage points—as the market expects—the initial market reaction will likely focus more on the likelihood of future hikes than on the rate decision itself.

If the Fed signals that it will monitor economic data after a single rate hike to address inflation, the pressure of monetary tightening on gold could ease somewhat.

Conversely, if the message indicates that further rate hikes are necessary to stabilize prices, the dollar and Treasury yields could shift again.

This would put downward pressure on gold prices.

One must also consider the possibility that interest rates remain unchanged, contrary to expectations.

If a decision to freeze rates is announced after financial markets have already priced in a high probability of a hike, existing positions could undergo rapid adjustment.

In such a scenario, volatility could increase not only for the dollar and Treasury yields but also for gold prices.

International oil prices are another variable to watch closely following the FOMC meeting.

If disruptions to crude oil supplies from the Middle East persist, oil prices could remain elevated.

The outlook for further rate hikes following this meeting will depend on the extent to which rising energy costs are reflected in U.S. inflation figures.

Conversely, if concerns over oil supplies ease and prices stabilize, inflationary pressures may also subside.

Ultimately, three key trends must be monitored simultaneously in the current gold market.

First is the Fed's monetary policy and U.S. Treasury yields; second is international oil prices and the geopolitical situation in the Middle East; and third is the movement of the dollar.

For domestic gold prices, the won-dollar exchange rate is an additional factor.

On the morning of the 16th, for instance, domestic gold prices rose as the won-dollar exchange rate climbed into the 1,370-won range, even though international gold prices had fallen. At the Korea Gold Exchange, the purchase price for one *don* (3.75g) of pure gold stood at 832,000 won, while the KRX gold price was recorded at 189,220 won per gram.

International spot gold traded below the $4,300 mark, at $4,293.29 per ounce.

Given the diverging trends between domestic and international gold prices, it is essential to monitor exchange rate movements following the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting.

Market expectations regarding the interest rate hike itself have somewhat converged.

The key factor determining the future direction of gold prices is how the Federal Reserve explains this decision and the extent to which it leaves the door open for further tightening.

U.S. Treasury yields and the value of the dollar could shift direction depending on whether this marks the end of the hiking cycle or leads to further rate increases.

Fluctuations in international oil prices and supply instability in the Middle East remain additional variables.

Domestically, it is also important to observe how the won-dollar exchange rate offsets or amplifies movements in international gold prices.

Following the FOMC meeting, the future interest rate trajectory will become clearer, moving beyond the simple question of whether a hike occurs. The direction in which international gold prices and exchange rates move during this process is considered a critical variable that will determine the next trend in domestic gold prices.

Real-time gold prices can be checked at the Korea Gold Exchange and the Korea Exchange (KRX) gold market.
