“진전된 민주주의, 탁월한 리더십으로 아시아 롤 모델 기대”
프레스센터에서 아시아기자 1천 명 서명 담긴 성명서 공개


아시아기자협회(이하 아자)는 4일 한국의 계엄 및 탄핵 사태와 관련해 오후 2시30분 서울 프레스센터에서 기자회견을 갖고 “한국의 혼란스런 상황이 조기에 수습되고 보다 진전된 민주주의와 탁월한 리더십으로 아시아의 롤모델이 돼주길 바란다”고 밝혔다.

'아자'는 이날 오후 프레스센터에서 소팔 차이 회장(캄보디아기자협회 고문, AP통신 로이터통신 프놈펜 특파원 역임)과 에디 수프랍토(인도네시아 Masagar News Online 편집국장, RCTI 전 편집국장) 부회장, 강석재 부회장(한국, 전 코리아헤럴드 기자) 등 회장단과 이상기 창립회장(아시아엔 발행인, 전 한겨레 기자) 등이 참석한 가운데 기자회견을 열고 ‘한국의 민주주의 회복을 염원하는 아시아기자 1000명 서명’이란 제목의 성명서를 공개했다.

'아자'는 성명에서 “일제 식민지와 6.25전쟁을 이겨내고 산업화, 민주화와 선진화를 동시에 성취하며 아시아의 모델국가로 우뚝 섰던 한국에서 벌어진 일련의 사태는 많은 실망을 안겨주었다”며 “한국이 어려운 국면을 조속히 극복해 종전보다 더욱 중요하고 선도적이며 모범적인 아시아 으뜸국가로서의 역할을 해주길 바란다”고 말했다.

특히 아자는 “한국은 한강 작가가 노벨문학상을 수상하여 우리 아시아인들의 긍지를 한껏 높여줬으며 최근 수년간 문화, 스포츠 등 소프트 파워뿐 아니라 반도체와 의료분야에서도 K-를 앞세운 단어를 생성해내며 세계의 주목을 받고 있다”며 “이번 사태를 조기에 극복해 명실상부한 아시아의 지도국가로서 아시아 이웃국가들의 여러 문제해결에 함께 나서며 인류평화에 기여하길 바란다”고 덧붙였다.

아시아기자협회는 이날 “한국의 집권당과 거대야당은 당리당략을 벗어나 공동운명체로서 양보하고 역지사지하기 바란다”며 한국민들의 단결력 발휘 등 6개항을 요구했다.

아자는 기자회견 이후에도 30여 회원국 기자들이 한국의 민주주의 회복 상황을 지속적으로 모니터 하는 한편 이를 촉구하고 응원하는 연대 서명을 이어갈 예정이다.

아시아기자협회는 2월 중순부터 회장단과 집행위원 등의 의견수렴을 거쳐 성명서를 채택해 현재 아시아 30여 개국에서 현지 기자들을 중심으로 서명운동을 진행하고 있다.

이번 서명에는 회장 국가인 캄보디아를 비롯해 부회장 국가인 한국, 말레이시아, 스리랑카, 이란, 키르기스스탄과 일본, 베트남, 필리핀, 인도네시아, 싱가포르, 인도, 파키스탄, 방글라데시, 레바논, 아프가니스탄, 대만, 네팔, 홍콩, 몽골, 카타르, 라오스 등 아시아 30여개국에서 참여하고 있다.

다음은 성명서 전문.

우리 아시아기자협회(이하 AJA) 회원들은 최근 한국에서 벌어지고 있는 계엄 및 탄핵 사태에 대해 다음과 같은 성명서를 발표한다. AJA는 우리의 성명서를 통해 한국의 혼란스런 상황이 조기에 수습되고 보다 진전된 민주주의와 탁월한 리더십으로 아시아 이웃 국가들의 롤모델이 돼주길 바라는 염원을 밝힌다.

아시아기자협회는 2004년 11월 창립 이후 지난 20년간 인류평화와 인권 보호를 바탕으로 아시아인의 관점을 통해 아시아의 사건들을 조명하고 보도하면서 저널리즘 발전에 일관된 역할을 해왔다.

이같은 시각에서 볼 때 이번 한국에서 벌어진 사태는 예상밖일 뿐 아니라 많은 실망을 안겨주었다. 이에 우리는 회원들의 총의를 모아 다음과 같은 성명서를 채택해 한국 사회에 전달한다. AJA는 이와 함께 앞으로도 회원국의 기자들이 한국의 민주주의 회복을 모니터 하는 한편 이를 촉구하고 응원하는 연대 서명을 이어갈 예정이다.

한국은 20세기 초반 이후 35년의 일제 식민지와 3년간의 6.25전쟁으로 경제적으로는 극빈과, 정치적으로는 독재체제에서 한동안 신음해야 했다. 하지만 한국은 인도의 시성 타고르가 일찍이 간파했듯이 ‘동방의 등불’로 지난 반세기 동안 산업화, 민주화와 선진화를 동시에 성취하며 아시아의 모델국가로 우뚝 섰다.

한국의 이같은 성장, 발전에는 뛰어난 정치경제 리더십과 함께 무엇보다 한국 국민들의 근면과 협동, 자주 정신과 높은 교육열 등이 뒷받침됐다는 것을 우리들은 우리 각국의 한국에 대한 정보를 취득함으로써 잘 알고 있다.

한국은 작년 12월 한강 작가가 노벨문학상을 수상하여 우리 아시아인들의 긍지를 한껏 높여줬다. 한국은 최근 수년간 문화, 스포츠 등 소프트 파워뿐 아니라 반도체와 의료분야에서도 K-를 앞세운 단어를 생성해내며 세계의 주목을 받고 있다.

우리 AJA 회원들은 한국이 현재의 어려운 국면을 조속히 극복해 종전보다 더 중요하고 선도적이며 모범적인 아시아의 으뜸국가로서의 역할을 해주길 바란다.

이에 우리는 다음 6개항을 촉구한다.

하나, 한국은 이같은 역사적이고 실증적인 국민들의 저력을 통해 지금 직면해 있는 계엄과 탄핵의 터널을 성공적으로 벗어나, K-민주주의를 아시아 각국과 나아가 전세계에 널리 전파하길 바란다.

둘, 한국 속담에 “비 온 뒤 땅이 더 굳는다”는 말처럼 이번 사태는 한국이 잠시 멈췄던 민주주의 열차를 재시동하기 위한 성장통이자 성숙통이라고 우리는 보고 있다. 이같은 통증을 온 국민의 단합으로 속히 멈춰주길 바란다.

셋, 한국의 집권당과 거대야당은 당리당략을 벗어나 공동운명체로서 양보하고 역지사지 하기 바란다. 분열은 한국의 퇴보를, 단합은 전진을 낳는다. 우리는 한국이 국민들의 역동성과 위기에 강한 단결력을 이번에도 아낌없이 발휘할 것으로 믿고 응원한다.

넷, 한국은 이번 사태를 조기에 극복해 명실상부한 아시아의 지도국가로서 아시아 이웃국가들의 문제해결에 함께 나서며 인류평화에 기여하길 바란다.

다섯, 우리는 한국이 겪고 있는 분열과 갈등은 통합과 소통을 통해 관용과 공존의 ‘한국형 민주주의’로 거듭나길 응원한다.

여섯, 우리 아시아 각국 기자들은 한국언론들이 여러 어려움 속에서도 진실과 공정에 바탕한 보도에 최선을 다하는 모습에 깊은 공감과 함께 아낌없는 격려를 보낸다.

이에 우리 AJA 소속 아시아 각국 기자들과 AJA에 직간접적으로 참여해온 비아시아권 기자들은 한마음 한뜻으로 오늘 성명을 발표하는 바이다.

Our the Asia Journalist Association(AJA) members make the following statement on the recent events of martial law and impeachment in Korea. Through our statement, we hope that Korea’s chaotic situation will be settled early and that Korea will serve as a role model for its Asian neighbors with more advanced democracy and outstanding leadership.

Since its foundation in November 2004, the Asia Journalist Association has played a consistent role in the development of journalism, shedding light on and reporting events in Asia through the perspectives of Asians based on human peace and human rights protection. From this point of view, the incident in Korea was not only unexpected but also disappointing for us.

We gathered our members’ opinions and adopted the following statement and delivered it to Korean society with our signature. Korea had to suffer from extreme poverty economically and dictatorship for a while due to 35 years of colony of Japanese Imperialism and three years of the Korean War since the early 20th century.

However, Korea has stood as a model country for Asia by achieving industrialization and democratization at the same time during the past half century due to the ‘lamp of the East’.

We are well aware that Korea’s growth and development, along with its outstanding political and economic leadership, were supported by the hard work and cooperation of the Korean people, the spirit of independence and high educational zeal. Korea was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature by Han Kang in December last year, raising the pride of Koreans in Asia to the fullest.

Korea has been attracting the attention of the world in recent years by generating the word K-OO, K-XX not only in soft power such as music and film but also in semiconductor and medical fields etc.

Our AJA members hope that Korea will overcome the current difficult situation as soon as possible and play a more important, leading and exemplary role as the leading country in Asia. Thus, we present the following six points.

First, we hope that Korea will successfully overcome the tunnel of martial law and impeachment that it is facing now through this historical and empirical power of its people and spread K-democracy to Asian countries and beyond.

Second, as the Korean proverb goes, “The earth hardens further after rain,” the latest incident is seen as both a growing and mature pain for Korea to restart its stalled democracy train. We hope the pain will be stopped as soon as possible by the unity of the whole Korean people.

Third, the ruling and opposition parties of Korea should make concessions and in the opposite direction as a common destiny. Divide will lead to Korea’s regression, and unity will lead to progress. We believe and support Korea that it will generously demonstrate its people’s dynamism and strong unity against crises this time.

Fourth, we hope that Korea will overcome this situation early and contribute to human peace by working together to solve the problems of its Asian neighbors as a true leader of Asia.

Fifth, We support that the division and conflict that Korea is experiencing will be reborn as a ‘Korean-style democracy’ of tolerance and coexistence through integration and communication.

Sixth, Our Asian journalists are deeply sympathetic and encouraged to see Korean media do their best to report based on truth and fairness despite various difficulties. In response, Asian journalists belonging to AJA and non-Asian journalists who have participated directly or indirectly in AJA will make a statement today with one mind.
