Gold prices at home and abroad rose after fluctuating significantly over the past week.

International gold prices surged past $4,600 per ounce, reaching their highest level in over three months. The price of pure gold at the Korea Gold Exchange also neared the 900,000 won mark per don, while the Korea Exchange (KRX) gold price recovered to the 200,000 won per gram level.

In the early part of the week, rising U.S. long-term Treasury yields dragged down gold prices, but the atmosphere changed dramatically in the middle of the week.

The turning point was when the U.S. Treasury Department unexpectedly expanded its purchases of long-term Treasuries, causing yields to plummet and the dollar to weaken. Coupled with concerns over U.S. fiscal and debt issues, buying pressure surged toward gold.

$69.62 per ounce on the 21st

- $4,600 per ounce on the 21st

- Focus on Fed Chairs PCE and Warsh's Jackson Hole speeches this week According to the Korea Gold Exchange and other sources on the 23rd, the purchase price of pure gold (24K, 3.75g) was 899,000 won as of the previous day.

Compared to the posted price of 876,000 won on the 17th, the price has risen by 23,000 won per don, or approximately 2.63%.

The fluctuations during the week were even greater.

On the 18th, the purchase price of pure gold briefly rose to 881,000 won but subsequently fell to 873,000 won. On the 19th, it even dropped from 862,000 won to 854,000 won.

However, the atmosphere changed starting on the 20th.

The price of pure gold, which had fallen to the 850,000 won range at one point on the 19th, rose to 884,000 won on the 20th. The upward trend continued on the 21st, reaching 892,000 won during trading, and recorded 899,000 won on the 22nd.

** The selling price of pure gold also rose by 18,000 won, from 733,000 won on the 17th to 751,000 won on the 22nd.

The selling price of 18K gold products increased from 538,800 won to 552,000 won during the same period. 14K also rose from 417,900 won to 428,100 won.

A similar trend was observed in the KRX Gold Market.

The KRX Gold Market was closed on the 17th due to the substitute holiday for Liberation Day, and trading resumed on the 18th.

On the 18th, the price of gold per gram in the KRX Gold Market closed at 199,950 won. This was an increase of 1,600 won (0.81%) compared to the previous trading day.

However, on the 19th, it plummeted by 4,370 won (2.19%) to 195,580 won. During the trading session, it fell to 195,170 won.

It reversed immediately the following day.

On the 20th, the KRX gold price closed at 201,620 won, surging 6,040 won (3.09%) from the previous day, reclaiming the 200,000 won mark.

On the 21st, it also closed at 203,410 won, up 1,790 won (0.89%).

Compared to 199,950 won on the 18th, the first trading day of last week, the price rose by 3,460 won, or approximately 1.73%, by the 21st.

In particular, changes in the international financial market were rapidly reflected in domestic gold prices, such as falling more than 2% on the 19th and jumping over 3% on the 20th.

The international gold market moved even more significantly. According to Reuters, spot gold prices rose 2.4% in a single day to $4,623.94 per ounce on the 21st (U.S. local time).

During trading, it surged to $4,631.99, marking its highest level in over three months since May 15.

International gold prices rose more than 5% over the week, marking the third consecutive week of gains.

The weekly upward trend was also clearly evident in U.S. December delivery gold futures.

According to MarketWatch data, U.S. gold futures opened at $4,440 per ounce on the 17th and closed at $4,473.70.

The atmosphere changed on the 18th.

Gold futures, which started at $4,473.40, fell to as low as $4,383.30 during trading and closed at $4,420.60.

On the 19th, the intraday low also fell to $4,378.

However, a steep rebound began afterward.

On the 19th, gold futures soared to $4,582.80 during trading before closing at $4,545.30.

On the 20th, it rose to $4,571.40, and on the 21st, it climbed to $4,690.40 during trading before finishing the week at $4,680.60.

Compared to the closing price of $4,473.70 on the 17th, the closing price on the 21st rose by $206.90, or approximately 4.63%.

The difference between the weekly low and high is even greater.

Gold futures, which had fallen to $4,383.30 during trading on the 18th, surged to $4,690.40 on the 21st. In just three days, it jumped $307.10, or about 7%, from its low to its high.

The decisive moment that changed the course of the gold market last week was the 19th.

Until then, what had been pressuring gold prices was U.S. long-term Treasury yields.

Long-term Treasury yields rose sharply as the U.S. fiscal deficit, increased supply of government bonds, and inflation concerns stemming from rising international oil prices overlapped.

In particular, the yield on 30-year U.S. Treasuries soared to 5.34% at one point, reaching its highest level since 2007.

Gold does not pay interest.

When Treasury yields rise, the opportunity cost of holding gold increases compared to interest-bearing bonds. This is why the rise in long-term interest rates acted as a burden on gold prices.

However, the situation reversed as the U.S. Treasury intervened in the market.

The U.S. Treasury decided to double the scale of liquidity support purchases for long-term Treasuries with maturities of 10 to 30 years, from $2 billion per transaction to at least $4 billion.

The measures will be in effect from September 9 to November 4.

Immediately after the announcement, the yield on 30-year U.S. Treasury bonds plummeted by approximately 10 basis points (1 bp = 0.01 percentage point). The dollar index also fell.

The gold market reacted immediately.

On the 19th, spot gold prices surged 3.6% to $4,487.91 per ounce and rose as high as $4,499.20 during trading. At the time, this was the highest level since June 4.

U.S. gold futures also closed up 2.8% at $4,545.30.

The Treasury Department's announcement did not merely lower Treasury yields.

The market focused on the fact that the U.S. government took direct action to curb the surge in long-term interest rates. With the U.S. national debt surpassing $40 trillion, the Treasury Department¡¯s move to stabilize the long-term government bond market has heightened concerns regarding U.S. fiscal sustainability and the value of the dollar.

A weaker dollar is favorable for gold.

Since international gold is traded in dollars, a decline in the dollar's value can reduce the purchasing burden for investors using other currencies.

There is also a possibility that demand for gold as a store of value will increase when anxiety over fiscal stability and currency value grows.

However, the U.S. Treasury Department's measures have not resolved the fundamental problems of the U.S. government bond market.

The size of the U.S. government bond market exceeds $32 trillion. Assessments suggest that purchasing only $4 billion per deal is insufficient to resolve the massive supply of government bonds and the fiscal deficit issues.

In fact, long-term bond yields, which plummeted immediately after the Treasury Department's announcement, have since risen again.

Market analysts have also suggested that while this measure helps provide short-term liquidity, it will be difficult to resolve the long-term imbalance in government bond supply and demand. Nevertheless, gold prices held the $4,500 per ounce level on the 20th.

On the 20th (U.S. local time), spot gold fell by only 0.1% to $4,516.19 per ounce.

Although profit-taking following the previous day's surge, a rebound in U.S. long-term Treasury yields, and hawkish minutes from the Federal Reserve (Fed) acted as burdens, the price maintained most of its gains.

Buying pressure intensified again on the 21st.

The continued weakness of the dollar, coupled with gold prices breaking through key technical resistance levels, fueled the upward trend.

Spot gold broke through the 200-day moving average of approximately $4,513 per ounce, which is considered a key level in the market.

With all major moving averages surpassed and technical buying added to the mix, gold prices broke through the $4,600 mark.

Bart Melek, Head of Global Commodity Strategy at TD Securities, noted that technical factors and a weak dollar are playing a major role in the recent rise in gold prices, and suggested $4,700 as the next target level if the upward trend continues.

Investment demand also appears to be reviving.

Goldman Sachs analyzed that demand for gold call options has surged as demand to hedge against global macroeconomic policy risks has increased.

This suggests that speculative interest in COMEX Gold and demand for gold ETFs sensitive to interest rate changes have recovered as market confidence in further rate hikes has weakened following the Fed's rate freeze in July. In a weekly survey conducted by Kitco, the outlook for further increases in gold prices was also dominant.

Eight out of 11 Wall Street experts (73%) predicted that gold prices would rise further this week. The remaining three expected the price to remain flat, and no experts predicted a decline.

Among 211 retail investors, 164 (78%) predicted a rise. 12% predicted a decline, and 10% predicted flat.

As gold prices rose by more than 5% over the past week, the burden of the short-term surge has also increased.

Some market experts cited by Kitco assessed the medium-to-long-term upward trend of gold positively, but cautioned that short-term momentum indicators have entered an overbought state.

Therefore, the short-term trend is expected to be determined by whether the price stabilizes above $4,600 or whether profit-taking sales emerge following the surge.

Other precious metals, including silver, also showed strength.

On the 21st (U.S. local time), spot silver prices rose 2.3% to $69.62 per ounce.

Platinum recorded a 2.8% increase to $1,878.58 per ounce, while palladium rose 0.8% to $1,344.96. Gold, silver, platinum, and palladium all increased on a weekly basis.

The magnitude of the rise in domestic gold prices was relatively smaller than that of international gold prices.

The price of pure gold on the Korea Gold Exchange rose approximately 2.63% from the 17th to the 22nd, while the KRX gold price increased by about 1.73% from the 18th, the first trading day of the previous week, to the 21st.

This contrasts with the fact that international spot gold prices rose by more than 5% over the week.

The won-dollar exchange rate can also be seen as having influenced this.

As of the 22nd, the won-dollar exchange rate stood at around 1,388 won.

As international gold prices are denominated in dollars, if the value of the Korean won strengthens, the rise in international gold prices may not be fully reflected in domestic gold prices.

This week, the gold market's focus shifts to U.S. inflation, economic indicators, and the Federal Reserve's monetary policy.

In particular, the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index—the inflation indicator favored by the Fed—and Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's speech at the Jackson Hole Symposium are cited as key variables.

Consumer confidence, new home sales, revised second-quarter GDP figures, durable goods orders, and weekly jobless claims are also scheduled to be released in succession.

If inflation slows more than expected, concerns about further Fed interest rate hikes will weaken, potentially giving weight to gold prices.

Conversely, if inflationary pressures remain strong or Chair Warsh signals a hawkish stance, the outlook for interest rate hikes will resurface, potentially increasing pressure for a short-term correction. Kitco also identified the PCE and the Jackson Hole speech as key variables for the gold market this week.

The situation in the Middle East and international oil prices are also variables.

If geopolitical instability intensifies, demand for safe-haven assets could push gold prices higher. Conversely, if rising international oil prices stimulate U.S. inflation, it could lead to concerns about the Fed tightening monetary policy and a rise in long-term interest rates, placing pressure on gold.

Ultimately, the first key point to watch in the gold market this week is whether international gold prices can hold the $4,600 level.

Over the past week, gold prices fell significantly at one point due to a surge in long-term government bond yields, but they completely reversed course following the U.S. Treasury's expansion of long-term bond purchases.

International gold prices surpassed $4,500 and $4,600 in succession and broke through the 200-day moving average. Domestically, the price of pure gold at the Korea Gold Exchange has also come very close to the 900,000 won mark per don (unit of weight).

Attention is focused on whether this week's PCE price index and Fed Chair Wash's Jackson Hole speech will serve as the driving force to continue the upward trend or act as a catalyst for a correction following the short-term surge. Real-time gold prices can be checked at the Korea Gold Exchange and the Korea Exchange (KRX) gold market.
