As domestic gold prices fell sharply, the purchase price for one *don* (3.75g) of pure gold dropped below the 800,000-won mark.

The KRX Gold Market, which had been trending downward since the Chuseok holiday, also saw a significant drop for two consecutive days, falling to the 181,000-won range per gram.

In the U.S. market, spot gold plunged more than 3% in a single day, hitting its lowest level in about seven weeks.

This decline was driven by a combination of factors: rising oil prices reigniting inflation concerns and strengthening expectations for further interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve, alongside rising U.S. Treasury yields and a strong dollar. According to the Korea Gold Exchange as of 10:00 a.m. on the 29th, the consumer purchase price for one *don* (3.75g) of pure gold (24K) was 792,000 won, down 16,000 won (2.02%) from the previous day's final posted price of 808,000 won.

The consumer selling price also fell to 680,000 won, a decrease of 4,000 won (0.59%) from the previous day's final posted price of 684,000 won.

At the same time, the price of 1g of gold on the KRX Gold Market stood at 181,090 won, down 2,850 won (1.55%) from the previous day.

The downward trend continued into this morning, following a 2.93% drop the previous day.

◇ Today's Gold Prices... 792,000 Won per *Don* of Pure Gold

According to the Korea Gold Exchange's rates at 10:00 a.m. on the 29th, the prices for pure gold, 18K gold, 14K gold, platinum, and silver all fell below the previous day's final posted prices.

The consumer purchase price for one *don* of pure gold was 792,000 won, a decrease of 16,000 won from the previous day's final posted price of 808,000 won.

This represents a decline of 2.02%.

The consumer selling price dropped to 680,000 won, a decrease of 4,000 won (0.59%).

For 18K gold, the consumer selling price was 499,800 won, down 3,000 won (0.60%) from the previous day's final posted price of 502,800 won. The price of 14K gold also fell by 2,300 won (0.59%) to 387,600 won, down from the previous day's 389,900 won.

Retail market rates apply when consumers purchase 18K and 14K gold products.

For platinum, the consumer purchase price (per 3.75g) dropped by 2,000 won (0.61%) to 327,000 won, while the selling price fell by 2,000 won (0.75%) to 265,000 won.

Silver prices also showed a downward trend.

The consumer purchase price for silver (per 3.75g) fell by 210 won (1.88%) to 11,160 won, and the selling price dropped by 180 won (1.94%) to 9,290 won.

A particularly notable aspect of the day's gold market was that the consumer purchase price for one *don* (3.75g) of pure gold fell below the 800,000-won mark.

While the price stood at 816,000 won at 10:00 AM on the 28th, the posted price for the day dropped to 808,000 won, and by the morning of the 29th, it had further declined to 792,000 won.

This represents a decrease of 24,000 won between the mornings of the 28th and the 29th.

◇ Price of One *Don* of Pure Gold Drops 70,000 Won in 11 Days

When looking at the broader recent trend, the scale of the price adjustment for domestic pure gold becomes even more significant.

Based on the daily posted prices from the Korea Gold Exchange, the consumer purchase price for one *don* of pure gold was 862,000 won on the 18th. Compared to the price of 792,000 won on the morning of the 29th, the price has dropped by 70,000 won over the past 11 days.

This represents a decline of approximately 8.12%.

The purchase price for pure gold, which was in the mid-to-high 800,000-won range on the 18th, fell to the 700,000-won range by the 29th.

The selling price for consumers also dropped by 37,000 won—or about 5.16%—falling from 717,000 won to 680,000 won during the same period.

The difference in the rates of decline between buying and selling prices stems from the distinct trading structures and pricing mechanisms associated with physical gold.

When analyzing recent trends in domestic gold prices, it is useful to look not only at daily fluctuations but also at changes in posted prices over a specific period.

Notably, on the 28th, the purchase price for pure gold—initially 816,000 won in the morning—underwent two subsequent adjustments, ultimately dropping to a final posted price of 808,000 won.

On the morning of the 29th, the price fell by another 16,000 won, slipping below the 800,000-won mark.

Amid a sharp correction in the international gold market, domestic physical gold prices have also seen an accelerated decline.

◇ KRX Gold Price Plunges for Second Consecutive Day... 181,090 Won

The KRX gold market also continued its downward trend.

According to the Korea Exchange (KRX), the price of 1 gram of gold in the KRX gold market stood at 181,090 won at 10:00 a.m. on the 29th, down 2,850 won (1.55%) from the previous day.

The opening price for the day was 183,080 won, which also marked the intraday high.

The price dropped as low as 180,750 won during the session. As of 10:00 AM, the trading volume stands at 56,301g, with a trading value of 10.194 billion won.

On the previous trading day, the KRX Gold Market closed at 183,940 won, down 5,560 won (2.93%) from the session prior.

That day, the opening price was 187,600 won, the high was 187,600 won, and the low was 183,660 won; trading volume reached 334,018g, and trading value totaled 61.798 billion won.

The 28th marked the first day of trading following the Chuseok holiday.

The price fell 2.93% as the drop in international gold prices during the holiday was factored in, and it continued to decline on the morning of the 29th.

However, the 181,090 won figure for the 29th represents the price as of 10:00 AM.

The final closing price for the day may vary depending on supply and demand dynamics during the trading session.

The posted price for physical gold (based on 3.75g units)—which consumers reference when buying or selling pure gold at the Korea Gold Exchange—differs from the KRX Gold Market’s 1g price in terms of trading structure and tax application.

Rather than directly comparing the absolute levels of the two prices, it is more appropriate to observe the trends emerging in each respective market.

Both markets saw declines on the morning of the 29th.

Domestic physical gold prices and exchange-traded gold prices both weakened simultaneously following the sharp drop in international gold prices.

◇ International Gold Prices Hit 7-Week Low; Dropped to $4,110 During Trading

The decline in domestic gold prices stems from a sharp drop in the international gold market on the 28th (U.S. local time).

According to Reuters, spot gold fell 3.5% to $4,136.81 per ounce as of 1:30 p.m. U.S. Eastern Time.

During the trading session, the price slid as low as $4,110.55, marking its lowest level since August 5.

U.S. gold futures also closed 3.5% lower at $4,168.40 per ounce.

Spot gold prices compiled by Kitco after the U.S. market close stood at approximately $4,131 per ounce, down about 3.8% from the previous day.

While there are slight variations in prices and fluctuation rates depending on the time of calculation, the overall trend remains the same: international gold prices fell sharply—by around 4%—on the 28th.

This sharp decline was driven by a convergence of factors—international oil prices, U.S. interest rate outlooks, Treasury yields, and the value of the dollar—all moving in directions unfavorable to the gold market.

Although gold is a quintessential safe-haven asset, it does not pay interest.

When yields on U.S. Treasury bonds rise, the relative opportunity cost of holding gold increases.

Furthermore, a strengthening dollar makes dollar-denominated gold more expensive for investors using other currencies.

◇ Gold Prices Fall Despite Middle East Tensions... Why?

A notable aspect of this sharp drop in gold prices is that the metal—typically a safe-haven asset—fell significantly even as tensions in the Middle East escalated. International oil prices surged in early trading as uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz intensified due to the conflict between the U.S. and Iran.

Although prices pared much of their gains following reports of mediation efforts, Brent crude ultimately closed at $105.28 per barrel, and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) at $92.60.

Typically, heightened geopolitical risk drives demand for gold as a safe-haven asset.

In this instance, however, concerns that rising oil prices could reignite inflation played a more significant role.

Sustained high oil prices can exert upward pressure on consumer prices by increasing transportation and production costs.

If expectations grow that inflation will remain stubborn, the likelihood increases that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates further or maintain high rates for an extended period.

Ultimately, the market dynamics suggest that gold prices were influenced more strongly by the chain of "Middle East tensions → rising oil prices → inflation concerns → expectations of further rate hikes → rising Treasury yields" than by the traditional "Middle East tensions → preference for safe assets → gold buying" pattern.

While international oil prices gave up much of their intraday gains amid renewed talk of potential negotiations between the U.S. and Iran, concerns persisted regarding the impact of high oil prices on inflation.

◇ U.S. 10-Year Treasury Yield Hits 5.23%

Rising U.S. Treasury yields also placed direct downward pressure on gold prices.

According to Kitco, the yield on the U.S. 10-year Treasury note climbed to around 5.23% on the 28th, marking its highest level since 2007. The dollar index also held near 101.16, maintaining a two-month high.

Bond prices and yields move in opposite directions.

If expectations for higher future interest rates strengthen, the market price of existing bonds—issued at relatively lower rates—can fall; consequently, the yield for investors purchasing these bonds at the lower price increases.

This shift is significant for gold.

This is because gold itself generates neither interest nor dividends.

When government bond yields exceed 5%, investors seeking safe-haven assets weigh interest-bearing government bonds against non-interest-bearing gold.

All else being equal, rising government bond yields increase the opportunity cost of holding gold, exerting downward pressure on gold prices.

A strong dollar compounds this pressure.

Since international gold prices are denominated in dollars, a rise in the dollar's value increases the purchasing cost for investors using other currencies, such as the euro or the yen.

The simultaneous occurrence of high government bond yields and a strong dollar has thus acted as a double burden on the gold market.

◇ Probability of an additional rate hike in October around 70%

Market expectations regarding interest rates are also rapidly shifting toward a hawkish stance.

The Federal Reserve raised its benchmark interest rate by 0.25 percentage points this month.

Subsequently, expectations for further rate hikes have strengthened, driven by a combination of high oil prices and comments from Fed officials wary of inflation risks.

Kitco reported that the market is pricing in a roughly 70% probability of a rate hike in October.

Earlier Kitco analysis had placed the probability of an additional rate hike at the October 27–28 meeting at 65.9%. Given that figures vary depending on the time of calculation, it is important to note the recent market trend, which prices in a roughly 70% probability of an additional rate hike in October.

Data from CME FedWatch, reported by Reuters, indicates a probability of approximately 94% for a single rate hike by December.

The likelihood of an immediate rate hike at the October meeting and the likelihood of a single hike occurring by December are based on different criteria.

Therefore, one cannot directly compare these two probabilities to conclude that market forecasts are conflicting.

This is precisely why the U.S. economic indicators scheduled for release this week are significant.

The market will reassess the state of U.S. inflation and the labor market through data such as job openings, ADP private employment figures, the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index, and non-farm payrolls.

If inflation proves higher than expected or employment remains robust, expectations for further monetary tightening could intensify.

Conversely, if inflationary pressures subside or the labor market shows a marked slowdown, expectations for rate hikes could weaken, potentially triggering shifts in Treasury yields and the value of the dollar.

◇ Will Gold Prices Test the $4,000 Level?

As international gold prices have retreated to the low $4,100 range, market attention is shifting to whether the price will find support near the $4,000 mark.

Société Générale recently interpreted the failure of gold prices to stabilize above the 200-day moving average as a bearish signal, analyzing that the downward trend could persist unless the price recovers to the vicinity of $4,315.

The firm identified $4,095 as the next level of support. The $3,960–$3,940 range, where lows were established in June and July, was identified as a key support zone.

Given that spot gold fell as low as $4,110.55 during intraday trading on the 28th, the gap to the $4,095 level is a mere $15.

This is why analysts suggest that if the $4,100 mark breaks in the short term, market attention could shift toward the $4,000 level.

Akash Doshi, Head of Gold Strategy at State Street Global Advisors, also raised the possibility of a correction toward $4,000, noting that further interest rate hikes, high real yields, and a strong dollar could weigh on gold in the short term.

However, these price levels are based on technical analysis and forecasts provided by financial institutions and market strategists.

They do not necessarily mean that the actual price of gold will fall to those levels.

◇ Key Technical Support Levels Collapse One After Another

The sharp drop on the 28th altered not only the price itself but also the technical trend.

According to Kitco's analysis, gold futures broke below successive key Fibonacci retracement levels based on the gains seen in August.

Early in the trading session, the gold price fell below the 61.8% retracement level near $4,298 and subsequently failed to hold the 78.6% retracement level near $4,174.

Kitco noted that the failure to decisively reclaim the $4,174 mark during intraday rebounds suggests that the previous support zone has shifted into a resistance zone.

Technical price levels serve as benchmarks for market participants when determining entry and exit points.

When prices rapidly break through key support levels, the resulting combination of stop-loss orders and additional selling can heighten short-term volatility.

Conversely, if the price recovers a previously lost support level after a sharp decline, it may be interpreted as a sign that selling pressure has eased.

However, it is important to note that Fibonacci retracement levels and moving averages are technical benchmarks derived from past price movements; they are not definitive predictors of future prices.

For now, the critical factor determining the short-term trajectory of gold prices is whether the price stabilizes around $4,100 or falls further toward the $4,000 level.

◇ Short-Term Weakness vs. Differing Medium- to Long-Term Outlooks

While caution regarding short-term gold prices has intensified, major financial institutions have not necessarily lowered their medium- to long-term forecasts. Société Générale cited structural gold purchases by central banks, the potential for declining real interest rates and a weaker dollar, and ETF investment demand as factors supporting the price in the medium to long term.

The firm projected that the gold price would reach $4,750 per ounce in the fourth quarter of this year, rising to $5,000 in the second quarter of 2027 and $5,250 in the third quarter.

Its annual forecasts stand at $4,500 for 2026 and $5,125 for 2027.

BMO Capital Markets lowered its short-term outlook while raising its long-term forecast.

BMO revised its average gold price forecast for the fourth quarter down from $4,750 to $4,650.

It projected a return to the $5,000 level by the second quarter of 2027.

Conversely, it raised its long-term average gold price forecast by 29%, from $3,100 to $4,000.

The analysis suggests that while high interest rates weigh on gold in the short term, structural buying demand—particularly from China—and concerns regarding currency values could support the price over the long term.

Therefore, the recent sharp drop in prices and the medium-to-long-term bullish outlooks from financial institutions need not be viewed as contradictory.

This is because short-term gold prices react sensitively to changes in interest rates, Treasury yields, and the dollar, whereas medium-to-long-term forecasts incorporate other factors such as central bank purchases, ETF inflows, Chinese demand, and concerns regarding fiscal health and currency values. Société Générale views the recovery of global gold ETF holdings to the 3,000-ton level as a sign that investment demand is reviving.

Ultimately, future price trends will depend on which force proves stronger: the pressure from high interest rates weighing down immediate gold prices, or the structural buying demand from central banks and investors supporting them.

◇ Silver prices also plunge 4–5%... dropping to the $61 range

Silver prices fell sharply alongside gold.

According to Reuters, the spot price of silver dropped 4.5% to $61.39 per ounce on the 28th.

Data compiled by Kitco after the U.S. market close showed a decline of approximately 5%, with the price hovering around $61.02.

Platinum fell 2.8% to $1,727.88, and palladium dropped 3.6% to $1,220.65.

This indicates that selling pressure was not limited to gold but extended across major precious metals.

Like gold, silver is a precious metal, but it is also heavily influenced by industrial demand.

Consequently, its price can be sensitive not only to changes in interest rates and the dollar but also to demand outlooks in sectors such as manufacturing and solar energy.

BMO has lowered its short-term outlook for silver prices.

It reduced its forecast for the average silver price in the fourth quarter of this year from $71.40 to $67.40 per ounce and lowered its forecast for the first quarter of 2027 from $73.50 to $69.30.

BMO cited factors such as the spread of technologies that reduce silver usage in the solar industry and the increasing substitution of silver with copper as headwinds for industrial demand. While the expansion of solar power generation has supported silver demand, high silver prices are prompting manufacturers to accelerate efforts to reduce consumption.

Conversely, the forecast for the long-term average silver price has been raised by 31%, from $36 to $47 per ounce.

Much like with gold, the near-term outlook was lowered to reflect short-term pressures, while the long-term price benchmark was actually increased.

Domestic silver prices also showed weakness on the 29th.

At the Korea Gold Exchange, the consumer purchase price for silver (based on a 3.75g unit) fell 1.88% from the previous day to 11,160 won, while the selling price dropped 1.94% to 9,290 won.

With domestic silver prices falling in tandem with international rates—which saw a sharper decline than gold—the precious metals market as a whole continues to exhibit weakness.

◇ Exchange Rate at 1,359.50 Won… A Variable for Domestic Gold Prices

Domestic gold prices are influenced not only by international gold rates but also by the won-dollar exchange rate.

On the morning of the 29th, the won-dollar exchange rate stood at 1,359.50 won.

Since international gold is traded in dollars, a rise in the won-dollar exchange rate can increase the price when converted into won, even if the international gold price remains constant.

Conversely, if the won strengthens and the exchange rate falls, it exerts downward pressure on the gold price in won terms.

Currently, the domestic gold market is seeing the exchange rate hover around the 1,360-won mark amidst a sharp drop in international gold prices.

However, the domestic price of physical gold is not determined solely by international gold prices and the exchange rate. Prices on the KRX Gold Market are determined by buy and sell orders within the exchange, while also reflecting factors such as domestic supply and demand, distribution costs, and value-added tax (VAT).

Therefore, the daily rate of decline in international gold prices does not necessarily have to match the rate of decline seen at the Korea Gold Exchange or the KRX Gold Market.

In fact, after international spot gold prices plunged by nearly 3% on the 28th, the purchase price for pure gold at the Korea Gold Exchange fell by 2.02%, and the KRX gold price dropped by 1.55% on the morning of the 29th.

◇ US Inflation and Employment Data: Key Factors for This Week's Gold Prices

The most significant variables for the gold market this week appear to be US economic indicators and the resulting shifts in interest rate outlooks.

At the heart of the sharp drop in international gold prices on the 28th lay concerns not only about rising oil prices themselves but also about how such increases might alter future inflation and Federal Reserve policy.

If upcoming data—such as the PCE price index and employment figures—come in stronger than expected, expectations for further interest rate hikes could intensify.

In such a scenario, Treasury yields and the dollar would likely remain elevated, potentially capping any rebound in gold prices.

Conversely, if inflation or employment data prove weaker than market expectations, the recently heightened expectations for interest rate hikes could partially recede.

A stabilization of Treasury yields and the dollar could create room for a rebound in gold prices.

The situation in the Middle East is another variable that requires close monitoring.

While geopolitical risks typically drive demand for gold as a safe-haven asset, a different dynamic has recently emerged: uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz is pushing up oil prices, which in turn amplifies concerns regarding inflation and interest rate hikes. As of the morning of the 29th, domestic gold prices are rapidly reflecting these shifts in the international market.

The purchase price for one *don* (3.75g) of pure gold at the Korea Gold Exchange has fallen below the 800,000-won mark to 792,000 won, while the KRX gold price has also dropped to 181,090 won per gram.

With international gold prices having retreated toward the $4,100 level during trading, key variables determining the short-term direction of gold prices will be whether the price holds support near the $4,000 mark and whether U.S. Treasury yields rise further.
