반도체 ETF(SOXL) 결제 1위…

반도체 ETF(SOXL) 결제 1위…

- SOXL cumulative settlement value hits $76.6 billion—roughly six times that of runner-up Tesla
- Combined settlement value of top 50 stocks reaches $260.4 billion; SOXL accounts for 29.4%
- SOXL shifts from net selling in Q1 and Q2 to net buying in Q3
- SpaceX ranks first in net buying; followed by Alphabet, Nasdaq 100, and S&P 500 ETFs
- Trading concentrated in leveraged ETFs amid semiconductor stock volatility; quarterly investment trends shift

Trading of U.S. stocks by domestic investors has been heavily concentrated in semiconductor-related leveraged exchange-traded funds (ETFs).

From January to September of this year, the combined settlement value (buy and sell) for SOXL—an ETF that tracks three times the daily return of the U.S. semiconductor sector—exceeded $76.6 billion. This figure is approximately six times larger than that of Tesla, which ranked second.

However, there was a distinction between total trading volume and stocks that saw net buying. While SOXL recorded a net selling position over the entire nine-month period, it shifted to net buying in the third quarter. In contrast, ETFs tracking the Nasdaq 100 and S&P 500 indices ranked high in terms of cumulative net buying.

An analysis of U.S. stock settlement data from January to September—conducted on the 12th using SEIBro, the securities information portal of the Korea Securities Depository—revealed that the Direxion Daily Semiconductor Bull 3X Shares (SOXL) topped the list for combined settlement value (buy and sell) at $76.638 billion. Tesla ranked second with $12.838 billion. It was followed by Micron Technology ($12.3 billion), Nvidia ($10.565 billion), and SanDisk ($9.103 billion).

Alphabet Class A ranked sixth with $7.7 billion, while Palantir took seventh place with $7.051 billion. TQQQ, an ETF that tracks three times the daily return of the Nasdaq-100 Index, ranked eighth with $6.948 billion.

A 3x leveraged ETF linked to the South Korean stock market and a 2x leveraged ETF linked to Tesla also made the list, ranking ninth and tenth, respectively.

The combined buy and sell volume for the top 50 securities by cumulative settlement value from January to September totaled $260.46973 billion. Of this total, the single stock SOXL accounted for 29.4%.

Trading activity at the top of the list was robust not only for semiconductors and large-cap tech stocks but also for leveraged ETFs that track the returns of specific indices or stocks at a multiple.

◇ Surge in SOXL Trading… Shift to Net Buying in Q3

The settlement value for SOXL increased with each passing quarter.

The combined buy and sell settlement value was approximately $20.49 billion in the first quarter. It rose to about $25.92 billion in the second quarter and climbed further to approximately $30.23 billion in the third quarter.

This represents an increase of approximately 47.6% in settlement value in the third quarter compared to the first. SOXL ranked first in combined buy and sell settlement volume across all three quarters.

However, a different trend emerges when distinguishing between buying and selling activity.

In the first quarter, the settlement value of SOXL sales exceeded that of purchases by approximately $810 million. In the second quarter, the volume of net selling widened to about $2.8 billion.

In contrast, the third quarter saw buy settlement values surpass sell settlement values by approximately $1.47 billion, marking a shift from net selling to net buying.

SOXL also ranked first in net buy settlement value for the third quarter.

However, looking at the period from January to September as a whole, net selling prevailed. Cumulative buy settlement value stood at approximately $37.25 billion, while sell settlement value was about $39.39 billion, meaning the volume of sales exceeded purchases by roughly $2.14 billion.

Ultimately, while SOXL was the most actively traded stock over the nine-month period, on a cumulative basis, it recorded net selling rather than net buying.

◇ AI Semiconductor Expectations and Stock Volatility Drive Heavy SOXL Trading

The heavy trading volume in SOXL stems from a combination of intense interest in the U.S. semiconductor sector and stock price volatility.

Throughout the year, the U.S. stock market maintained high expectations for semiconductor demand driven by expanded investment in artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure. The earnings and future demand outlooks of semiconductor companies served as key variables influencing the performance of technology stocks.

Conversely, factors such as rising U.S. Treasury yields and instability in oil prices weighed on technology stocks. Semiconductor stocks also experienced repeated fluctuations as market optimism regarding the industry clashed with the pressure of rising interest rates. During this period, active trading—both buying and selling—took place for SOXL, an ETF that tracks three times the daily return of the semiconductor sector.

SOXL is structured to amplify gains when the semiconductor sector rises, but it also magnifies losses when the sector falls. Because it tracks three times the daily return, the cumulative return over the long term may differ from a simple three-fold multiple of the underlying index's growth.

Trading patterns among domestic investors varied by quarter. While the volume of sales exceeded purchases in the first and second quarters, the trend shifted to net buying in the third quarter.

However, transaction amounts alone cannot definitively reveal individual investors' trading motives or their outlook on future stock prices. The high transaction volume for SOXL reflects active buying and selling activity within the semiconductor sector.

◇ SpaceX Tops Net Buy List; Index-Tracking ETFs Rank High

The rankings for cumulative net purchase value differed from those based on total transaction volume (combined buys and sells).

SpaceX, the U.S. aerospace company, ranked first in cumulative net purchase value from January to September, recording approximately $2.536 billion.

Alphabet Class A (Alphabet A) took second place with about $1.773 billion. It was followed by the Invesco Nasdaq 100 ETF at approximately $1.732 billion and the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO) at about $1.511 billion. ProShares Ultra QQQ (QLD), which tracks twice the daily return of the Nasdaq-100 Index, also recorded net buying of approximately $1.184 billion.

Net buying figures stood at approximately $1.025 billion for the Schwab US Dividend Equity ETF (SCHD), $990 million for Micron, and $931 million for Invesco QQQ.

Marvell Technology and the Roundhill Memory ETF also made the top 10 list, each recording net buying of around $800 million.

Notably, a large number of ETFs tracking the Nasdaq-100 and S&P 500 indices ranked high in net buying.

While active trading took place in individual semiconductor stocks and leveraged ETFs, buying also outweighed selling in ETFs that track major market indices.

This demonstrates that stocks with the largest trading volumes do not necessarily coincide with those where the value of buy settlements exceeds that of sell settlements.

◇ Settlement Value for Top 50 Stocks Peaked in Q2; Declined in Q3

A comparison of quarterly settlement values for the top 50 stocks reveals that the total volume was highest in the second quarter.

The combined settlement value (buys and sells) for the top 50 stocks was approximately $86.67 billion in the first quarter.

This figure rose to approximately $102.11 billion in the second quarter, an increase of about 17.8% from the previous quarter. In contrast, the figure dropped to approximately $80.94 billion in the third quarter, representing a decline of about 20.7% compared to the second quarter.

SOXL, however, saw an increase in settlement value during the same period; trading volume for the stock expanded even as the total settlement value for the top 50 stocks declined in the third quarter.

There were also changes in the composition of the top-ranked stocks across quarters.

A comparison of the top 50 stocks by combined buy and sell settlement value between the first and third quarters revealed that 35 stocks appeared in both lists, while the remaining 15 were replaced.

The turnover was even greater among the top 50 stocks by net buy settlement value; only 21 stocks appeared on the lists for both the first and third quarters.

This indicates that the composition of stocks showing a net buying trend changed more significantly than that of the most heavily traded stocks.

This analysis utilized data from Seibro regarding the top 50 U.S. stocks by settlement value, covering both the cumulative period from January to September and individual quarters. "Combined buy and sell settlement value" refers to the sum of buy and sell settlement values, while "net buy settlement value" is calculated by subtracting the sell settlement value from the buy settlement value.

The aggregate settlement value of the cumulative top 50 stocks does not match the sum of the top 50 stocks for each quarter due to differing selection criteria. Furthermore, the settlement value of the top 50 stocks does not represent the total settlement value for all U.S. stock trading.
