FOREX.com

Domestic gold prices are falling for the second consecutive day. The price of pure gold at the Korea Gold Exchange has fallen to the 890,000 won range per don, and the gold price on the Korea Exchange (KRX) has also dropped by more than 0.6%.

On the other hand, international gold prices recovered the $4,600 per ounce mark, recovering from the previous day's sharp decline. With the dollar turning weaker, the market is awaiting the Jackson Hole speech by U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh.

As of 10:20 a.m. on the 28th, the purchase price of pure gold (24K, 3.75g) at the Korea Gold Exchange is 896,000 won.

This is 4,000 won (0.45%) lower than the previous day's final quoted price of 900,000 won.

The selling price of pure gold also fell to 752,000 won, down 1,000 won (0.13%) from 753,000 won the previous day.

The selling price of 18K gold products fell by 700 won (0.13%) to 552,800 won. 14K gold fell by 600 won (0.14%) to 428,700 won.

Unlike gold, the prices of other precious metals rose.

The purchase price for one don of silver rose by 70 won (0.55%) to 12,680 won. The selling price rose by 60 won (0.56%) to 10,710 won.

The purchase price for one don of platinum increased by 1,000 won (0.28%) to 356,000 won. The selling price also rose by 1,000 won (0.35%) to 289,000 won.

The price of pure gold at the Korea Gold Exchange also showed significant fluctuations the previous day.

The price of pure gold, which briefly dropped to 899,000 won per don on the morning of the 27th, was subsequently quoted at 902,000 won and 906,000 won. The final price was 900,000 won.

As the price fell back to 896,000 won this morning, the price of pure gold is currently hovering below the 900,000 won mark.

The downward trend is also continuing in the KRX gold market.

At the same time, the price of gold per gram in the KRX gold market is trading at 204,350 won, down 1,300 won (0.63%) from the previous trading day.

The gold price, which started at 204,740 won today, rose to 205,280 won during the session but failed to sustain the upward momentum. The low was 204,040 won.

The KRX gold price closed at 205,650 won yesterday. On the 27th, it also fell by 1,850 won (0.89%) compared to the previous trading day.

Consequently, the KRX gold price has continued its downward trend for two consecutive days.

Domestic gold prices are influenced not only by international gold prices but also by the won-dollar exchange rate. On this day, domestic gold prices are moving in the opposite direction to international gold prices.

International spot gold rebounded by 0.4% on the 27th (US local time) after plunging 1.4% the previous day. Although it rose, it failed to fully recover the previous losses.

The exchange rate also had an impact. At the same time, the won-dollar exchange rate stood at 1,378.80 won. Since international gold prices are traded in dollars, a weak dollar and a strong won can act as factors that lower domestic gold prices when converted into won.

In the international market, a weak dollar acted as a factor for the rebound in gold prices. On the other hand, domestic gold prices are continuing to weaken despite the rebound in international gold prices, as they are influenced by the won-dollar exchange rate and compounded by the time lag in reflecting the previous day's decline in international gold prices.

International gold prices rebounded after just one day.

According to Reuters, spot gold prices rose 0.4% to $4,607.90 per ounce on the 27th (US local time).

It rebounded after falling 1.4% the previous day, marking the largest single-day drop in a week.

U.S. gold futures for December delivery also closed at $4,664 per ounce, up 0.2%.

A weaker dollar drove up gold prices.

When the value of the dollar falls, the price burden of gold traded in dollars decreases for investors using other currencies.

This is why the recent movements of gold prices and the dollar are closely linked.

Early this week, gold prices surpassed $4,696 per ounce, rising to their highest level since mid-May.

The driving force behind the rise was the renewed focus on U.S. fiscal issues and the decline in the dollar's value, as the U.S. Treasury expanded its purchases of long-term government bonds.

However, the upward trend was halted as profit-taking sales emerged just as the price was nearing $4,700. On top of this, as the U.S. Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index for July slightly exceeded market expectations, caution regarding the possibility of an interest rate hike intensified, causing gold prices to fall below $4,600 the previous day.

The July PCE price index rose 3.7% compared to the same month last year, slightly exceeding the market forecast of 3.6%.

However, a shift in interest rate outlooks has also emerged this time.

According to CME FedWatch, the probability of a U.S. interest rate hike in September has dropped to around 34%.

Conversely, the probability of a rate hike by December is reflected at around 74%.

This means that while the immediate likelihood of a September hike has decreased, the possibility of further tightening by the end of the year has not completely disappeared.

Since gold does not pay interest, high interest rates generally put pressure on its price.

Therefore, gold prices are likely to react more sensitively in the future not only to inflation itself but also to how the Federal Reserve assesses current inflation and what path it presents for future interest rates.

The market has also entered a critical phase in terms of technical trends.

Although gold prices fell sharply yesterday, they remain above the 200-day moving average, which serves as a key long-term trend line in the market.

Kitco analyzed that while an "Evening Star" pattern, indicating a potential short-term bearish reversal, has recently formed on the gold chart, there are no signals confirming further declines.

In particular, they considered the fact that gold prices are holding the 200-day moving average to be significant.

Recently, gold prices have risen as they successively broke through the 50-day and 200-day moving averages.

As prices have surpassed the price levels that previously acted as resistance, the key factor during the correction process is whether these levels can transform into new support lines.

If gold prices hold above the 200-day moving average, there is a greater likelihood that yesterday's sharp decline will be interpreted as a correction following a short-term surge, rather than a collapse of the uptrend.

Conversely, if prices fall below key moving averages again and fail to rebound, it is difficult to rule out the possibility that the scope of the correction will widen.

At the upper end, $4,700 remains a strong resistance level.

Fawad Razaqzada of FOREX.com analyzed that selling pressure emerged as gold prices entered a critical resistance zone between $4,655 and $4,700 per ounce.

This price level is the same zone that blocked gold prices from rising last May.

In fact, gold prices surpassed $4,696 this week but fell after failing to break through $4,700.

Therefore, in the short term, it is crucial to see if the price can stably hold the $4,600 level while simultaneously breaking through the resistance zone between $4,655 and $4,700 again.

Another technical benchmark mentioned is $4,692.

Kitco analyzed that if gold futures break through the Fibonacci retracement level of $4,692 again, there is a possibility that the uptrend will regain momentum.

On the other hand, if the price falls again, it is necessary to first check for support near the 200-day moving average.

The fact that the recent rise has been significant is a burden.

Gold prices have risen by approximately 15% since the beginning of August.

Given the significant price increase in a short period, there is a possibility that profit-taking selling pressure will repeatedly emerge during any further upward movement.

While Razakzada assessed that the gold market is somewhat overbought, he noted that it is still difficult to conclude that selling pressure has secured the market's dominance.

He suggested that the recent price trend remains strong and is in the process of verifying support levels after breaking through existing resistance lines.

Unlike short-term price pressures, factors supporting mid-to-long-term gold demand remain intact.

Bob Haberkorn, Chief Market Strategist at StoneX, cited investment demand through gold exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and demand from central banks seeking alternative assets to the dollar as key supporting factors.

Fund inflows into gold ETFs have recently been increasing again.

Gold purchases by central banks around the world are also continuing.

In particular, analysis suggests that moves to diversify dollar-centric foreign exchange reserves are creating a structural shift in gold demand.

UBS is also paying close attention to these trends. UBS projected that concerns over the U.S. fiscal outlook and moves to reduce reliance on dollar assets will support gold prices in the mid-to-long term.

With the Dollar Index (DXY) falling 2.4% over the past month, analysts suggest that gold is once again drawing attention as an alternative to traditional reserve currencies and as a store of value.

Central bank purchases are also substantial.

According to UBS, the People's Bank of China increased its gold holdings by 20 tons last July. This marks the largest monthly increase since October 2023.

Central banks worldwide purchased a total of 289 tons of gold in the second quarter of this year.

UBS estimated that the total volume of central bank gold purchases for the entire year will reach between 750 and 1,000 tons.

The explanation is that while central bank purchases alone do not cause gold prices to rise sharply, they can serve to support the price floor when investment demand weakens. Based on factors such as the dollar's weakness and central bank demand, UBS projected that the price of gold could reach $5,400 per ounce over the next 12 months.

However, short-term risk factors are also evident.

If U.S. economic indicators remain stronger than expected or if inflationary pressures increase again due to rising international oil prices, the likelihood of the Federal Reserve tightening monetary policy could rise.

In this scenario, U.S. Treasury yields and the dollar could rise again, placing pressure on gold prices.

Ultimately, the market's attention is turning toward Jackson Hole.

Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh is set to deliver a speech at the Fed's annual economic policy symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, on the 28th (local time).

Market interest is high as this marks his first speech at Jackson Hole since taking office as Fed Chairman.

Investors are closely watching to see what signals Warsh will issue regarding the policy direction to return inflation to the Fed's target level and the future path of interest rates. In particular, given that this remark comes immediately after PCE inflation data released the previous day slightly exceeded market expectations, there is a possibility that it will have a direct impact on the gold market.

If Wash emphasizes price stability while leaving the possibility of further tightening open, the dollar and government bond yields could rise, and downward pressure on gold prices could reappear.

Conversely, if he emphasizes the burden that current high interest rates place on the economy and financial markets, or adopts a cautious stance regarding further tightening, it could serve as a bullish factor for gold.

The gold market is currently in a phase where short-term corrections and medium-to-long-term bullish factors are in opposition.

International gold prices have recovered the $4,600 level after yesterday's sharp decline, but they are still a long way from this week's high of around $4,700.

Domestic, the price of pure gold on the Korea Gold Exchange has fallen to 896,000 won per don, and the KRX gold price has also been declining for two consecutive days. In the short term, the technical direction of gold prices is expected to be determined by defending the 200-day moving average, maintaining the $4,600 level, and whether the resistance zone between $4,655 and $4,700 is broken again.

Additionally, Chair Walsh’s Jackson Hole speech has emerged as the closest variable that could alter interest rate outlooks and the direction of the dollar.

In the mid-to-long term, ETF inflows, central bank purchases, U.S. fiscal issues, and the trend of diversifying dollar assets are supporting the lower end of gold prices.

Therefore, whether the recent correction is merely a breather following a short-term surge or leads to further declines is expected to become clearer depending on the direction in which interest rates and the dollar move after Jackson Hole.

Real-time gold prices can be checked on the Korea Gold Exchange and the Korea Exchange (KRX) Gold Market.
